Wheat and Weeds

I have been focusing in Mathew and in the 13 th chapter where all the parables are and am trying to focus on one parable at a time, as want to glean form each one., so am focusing on the Wheat and the Weeds.

The Parable of the Weeds

24Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
27"The owner's servants came to him and said, 'Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?'
28" 'An enemy did this,' he replied.
"The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?'
29" 'No,' he answered, 'because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. 30Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.' "

I know you all know all this but just want to note it for my own reference.
The man who planted the Good Seed in the field is the Son of Man .
The field is the world.
Good Seed are all God's children who belong to the kingdom
Weeds are people who belong to the evil one
The enemy who planted the bad seed is the devil.
The harvest Time is the end of the world.
Workers who gather are God's angels.

These look identical on the surface and will not be separated until they begin to bear fruit. The wheat will bow low under the weight of it's fruit (humility) and the tares will always remain standing tall and straight (pride).

Amen

I think I asked someone this once, but don't remember the answer: What is the difference, or how do you know if it is a parable or a true story? For some reason, I always thought the story of Jonah and the whale as being a parable.

I know you all know all this who says everyone knows all this? but just want to note it for my own reference.
The man who planted the Good Seed in the field is the Son of Man. Which is Jesus, right?
The field is the world.
Good Seed are all God's children who belong to the kingdom
Weeds are people who belong to the evil one
The enemy who planted the bad seed is the devil.
The harvest Time is the end of the world.
Workers who gather are God's angels. Why are the angels the ones who gather the harvest? I though we were the workers.?

smelly cat
It is the case of dividing evil from oneself , can we go to heaven with evil in us?
Thats why it is said'while you are pulling the weeds you may root uo the wheat to'
Rev;11
For this reason the two olive branches will walk the eath for 1260 days in a sympol of repentance for the purpose of salvation before the final havest.

PAR'ABLE, v.t. To represent by fiction or fable. Webster/E-sword

A story told to express a moral, precept or teach.
In the case of the parable of the the weeds like many others in scripture we are told it is a parable.
Mat 13:24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
There is no such statement concerning Jonah
Personaly I would not concider Jonah or anything we are not told by scripture is a parable as a parable.
If we demenish the accounts of those thngs that are hard to accept we question the ability and integrity of God and his word.

Let's go to the beginning.
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
If we accept that God created all that is, heaven and earth, we realy have no reason not to believe the jonah and the great fish accountis anything but a real event. To one who has created the world, sustaining a man in the belly of a large fish is no problem.
However if we do not or cannot accept Genesis 1,1 as it is told in scripture then every thing that follows is at best questionable and at worst complete fiction.
Unless it is definately not a real account and or stated as such I take it as real.
If I error I choose to do so on the side of taking scripture too literal.

Does that mean when the wheat is mature enough, then it won't be pulled up when the weeds are pulled?
My simple understanding of this parrable is that the saved. (The field) is the world. The (wheat) saved will dwell on this earth with the unsaved (the weeds). until judgment(the harvest). The reason being that the servants (that would be us ) cannot remove the weeds (the unsaved)without damaging the wheat(the saved) and there by reducing the harvest.
The angels (harvasters) will remove the unsaved from the harvest and take them to be burned (cast into hell).
As Bo pointed out ,to us the wheat and weeds look the same. That simple fact and the parrable says that we are unable to judge and remove the unsaved from amung us because we cannot tell who is and who is not saved resulting the saved being prematurely removed(before they are supposed to be).
.
In short God doesn't want us to be trying to judge who is or isn't saved. Because in our efforts we will loose or damage some of the wheat (saved.) God does not want that one (kernal of grain) person in the feild tha Jesus has planted to be lost.
Why are the angels the ones who gather the harvest? I though we were the workers.?
We are the servants and or wheat and the angels the harvaters. We can't be the harvasters because come judment we are the harvest and we are not able to correctly separate the saved from the unsaved (in the world ) field.

Parables are stories but they have real application in everyday life.:)

Thanx for answering all my questions, Theophilus. The story makes a lot more sense when you know who the characters are. But, how were the people in those days able to understand such things? They must have been used to parables like this in their dialogue back then. It was very interesting.

Cliff .... Thanks for your inspired answer. Excellant . I don't need to add any more .... Bonnie I think you got your answer .

Thanx for answering all my questions, Theophilus. The story makes a lot more sense when you know who the characters are. But, how were the people in those days able to understand such things? They must have been used to parables like this in their dialogue back then. It was very interesting.

They were not able to understand until Jesus explained them to them, because most could not read of write.

Sadly most were not as concerned about what He was saying as they were with the fishes, loaves and miracles. We see this unhappy trend today in many churches who focus on trying to get things from God instead of growing in their walk and relationship with Him. And sadly like the people of those days they never really met God though He was standing in their midst.

Your welcome:)

The primary means of communication then was speaking and hearing. As Bo said very few could read or write. There wasn't nearly as much talking as we have today and when someone did speak the prodent often listened.
I don't believe parables were as common as one might believe. That is one reason why Jesus sometimes explained them to the discples after.

Though the times manner of communication and culture have changed tremendously over the last 2000 years, human nature is still very much the same. Mankind can still be deceived or willfuly ignorant of that which we don't like or don't understand and are afraid of.

The Pharicees, the learned amung the chosen people of God, those who had all the scroals, all the knowledge ,those who studied continously the word, The ones who by all means should have been the first to recognize the promised messiah, looked right into his eyes, listened to his words and yet would not accept him or could not recognize Him. Not only that they saw Him as a threatand coerced to have Him crusified. They were concumed with their own idea as to what the messiah would be like and do. And jesus did not fit that expectation.
Pride, arrogance, prejudce, greed, fear, and simple ignorance prevented them from seeing what was right before their eyes.

Before we dump on the Pharicees we seriously need to ask ourselves If Jesus come back today ,with all that we know, would we (The world, the church)do any better than they??? Sad to say I seriously doubt it.:(

What makes you or I any differant??? We seek. You and I and every other true christian diligently seeks to know, not just about Jesus but to know Him and produce fruit consistant with that knowledge and relationship with him.

Back to the subject of parables (I do get lost sometimes)

Parables are the most effective and beautiful way of communicating.
What is done in a parable is the subject or precept that is to be expressed is spoken of in terms that the hearer can relate to.
By using examples and consepts related to the hearers life and experience the point is conveyed more clearly.
Farmers can see the relationship (how they are simular)in the parable of the weeds because the foundational princibles are the same. They can visualize the feild ,know what is meant by harvest and what weeds and wheat are.
Some parables are extended similes ( comparisons) The parable of the weeds is such a parable. Jesus said; "The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: . . .

To the farmer ,the commoner this made it understandable . But to Pharicees not so.
If one knows who is listening they can convey a desired message in a croud to those they desire to and leave the rest lost and confused.
Jesus often spoke in parables and terms that the common man or woman could understand while the the religous elite couldn't get a clue.
Can you imagine how this made the Pharicees look and feel standing amung the crowds of commoners, social and religous rejects, sinners, drinkers, tax collecters and prostitutes ??? Stupit and angry I might imagine.
And the uneducated commoner drawn to Him because they could understand what their religous leaders could not????
I gotta tell you I'm loven it.

But do you realize that many times the very same thing is happening today????? in the world, in the church??????

1Co 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

1Co 1:20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

Luk 15:1 Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.
Luk 15:2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
Luk 15:3 And he spake this parable unto them, saying,
Luk 15:4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
Luk 15:5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
Luk 15:6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.
Jesus took those the pharicees had rejected Then he took their disciples, their following and told them as he tells us to this very day that we are all equal. That He cares as much for the lost as those who think they have it all together, are better, deserving of salvation. Jesus put the highest in line with the lowest and to say the least they did not appreciate it.
And many times He used parables to do it.
;)

Blessings

Cliff:)

Wow thanks Cliff ,and now I am reminded of the parable of the prodigal and we maybe can expound on that one.

Luke 15:11-20

The Parable of the Lost Son

11Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. 12The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them.
13"Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17"When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' 20So he got up and went to his father.
"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

I think so many people have focused on the wayward son and his wrong doing and how terrible he was and how he squandered all the money and we forget the lesson inside is really about our heavenly Father and how compassionate and loving He is. This story is an example of the true unconditional love of our Heavenly Father.

The Father waited for him in the house which was also profound cause if you had a wayward son , you would be trying to see what he was doing or what he was up to and even to the fact of asking his friends and all who know him . But no the Father did not do that .... He waited for him in the house , let him do his own thing and waited. Just like our Heavenly Father waits when we go wrong, He waits for us to come home again.

Also you have to understand that in the Middle Eastern culture when the eldest son got their inheritance which was two -thirds that the father would have been dead. and the reason being is the eldest had to take care of his mother and run the family bussiness.

This boy asked the father for his share and insulted the father by wishing he was dead. That was unheard of in those days.

The father let him go because he knew that :

love only has what love lets go of .

Listen to the voice of the Father.

Another point , men never ran in those days and the father ran to his son ... only the servants and the slaves ran.

This was a form of humiliation and a form of the Cross where Jesus died on the cross.... God's exempliary Persuit.

Wow . . . Dusty you have that one pretty well covered.;)

The inhertance wasted on sin
Luk 15:13 After a few days the younger son sold his part of the property and left home with the money. He went to a country far away, where he wasted his money in reckless living.
Luk 15:14 He spent everything he had. Then a severe famine spread over that country, and he was left without a thing.

We all have done this in one way or another. . Haven't we:eek:
And so often we only turn to Christ when all else is gone.

And the confession

Luk 15:21 'Father,' the son said, 'I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son.'

Look familier???? Kind of like the start of the common sinners prayer, perhaps??

Since you covered it so well let me take us a little ways down the road.;)

Luk 15:25 "In the meantime the older son was out in the field. On his way back, when he came close to the house, he heard the music and dancing.
Luk 15:26 So he called one of the servants and asked him, 'What's going on?'
Luk 15:27 'Your brother has come back home,' the servant answered, 'and your father has killed the prize calf, because he got him back safe and sound.'
Luk 15:28 The older brother was so angry that he would not go into the house; so his father came out and begged him to come in.
Luk 15:29 But he spoke back to his father, 'Look, all these years I have worked for you like a slave, and I have never disobeyed your orders. What have you given me? Not even a goat for me to have a feast with my friends!
Luk 15:30 But this son of yours wasted all your property on prostitutes, and when he comes back home, you kill the prize calf for him!'
Luk 15:31 'My son,' the father answered, 'you are always here with me, and everything I have is yours.

The other brother. . .
Tell me if you havn't seen this at least once when someone who has lived a riotous life and after their coming to Christ joins a church were they are known.
The brother is not happy! In fact he is realy ticked off:eek:
"Here" he says; "I have been the perfect christian, never missed church ,allways there to do the right thing, and you have the nerve to bring in this sinner who has wasted everything I have earned and celibrate over it???? where's my party?? when is my feel good day??When do i get what I deserve.

The father says. . .
Luk 15:32 But we had to celebrate and be happy, because your brother was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.' "
Well even if the church or some of those in it resent your return from the lost our father in heaven doesn't.
And for the one who has found themselves feeling like the other brother?
Another coming to Christ doesn't take anything from what you have inherited and we didn't earn ours any more than the prodigal earned his.
Jesus said,
Joh 14:2 There are many rooms in my Father's house, and I am going to prepare a place for you. I would not tell you this if it were not so.

Don't worry there is room enough for all.

Blessed
Cliff
