TV viewing habits

I'm just doing a little survey on each...I'm not judging anyone ok?

Some of us like watching tv, some reading books, and others listening to music or radio. What I'm interested in is how much or often do we do of each activity, and what our daily habits are?

I'll start by sharing my TV viewing habits and how they've changed over time.

Ok I as a child of the 80s grew up with television. Everybody had at least one tv at home, usually in the living room, it was in colour, and I remember it having just two channels, then about 10 years later we had 3, and then sky tv came (cable tv) which you had to pay for, and eventually more people got that, and they could get heaps more channels.

As a child I would watch whatever my older sister watched, as she was the eldest and had control of the tv and later, the remote (the older ones you had to get up to change the channel!). There were childrens shows on before and after school, and in the daytime there were soaps, news was at 6o' clock, and then more soaps, then a sitcom, a more adult tv show and maybe a movie. Then tv would shut down for the night to start again the next morning.

My dad would religiously watch the 6 o clock news as he was also interested in the weather. The news was an hour long, and very boring to my childish eyes. I preferred cartoons, although I never made much sense of some of them, like Tom and Jerry or Roadrunner! There was a tv program called Playschool, and this taught children how to spell and tell the time, and had puppets and toys on it. There was also Sesame Street. I thought the puppets were real characters! They were more interesting than the boring adults.

There were lots of advertising for stuff people couldn't afford, but we had to endure the ads (commercials) anyway. Every 15 minutes, ads would come on. We watched tv every single day. On Sundays, there used to be no ads at all. As soon as we got home from school, we would turn on the tv, and watch until dinner time.

I know! Our eyes must have rotted and our brains must be damaged from all the radiation. To be continued....

As a child I remember Saturday morning cartoons and TV came on in the evening most days. The news would come on a six, were several sitcoms that we watched during the week, the Disney movie following a wild life program. I still remember many of the names. We never missed Star Trek must have watched every episode a dozen times or more. We had one TV which started out as a small black and white.

There was always time for the great outdoors and reading. Even when I was young I remember reading full length novels in a day or two. Mostly science fiction in those days. Occasionally, I listened to music but it was usually music that my parents liked and that I grew to enjoy. Marty Robbins, Patsy Cline, Alan Sherman, Johnny Cash and a number of others. By the time I was done with high school I quit listening to newer music never missing the music of the 80's and after. There are a few that I enjoy but I rarely find time to listen to music.

These days I watch much less TV and I am far more picky about the books I read, very selective about my music. I don't even know the names of the sitcoms that might have come out in that last 10-15 years. We do enjoy watching some movies and documentaries we find on the internet.

pretty much the same as you guys above..

I don't own a tv, I have a laptop and Netflix.
in the times I am off work, especially in lockdown, you will find me alone under the stairs enjoying documentaries, wildlife, current affairs, anything scientific, history , even ancient mythology and futuristic, sci fi thingies...

ps. I still love and watch tom and jerry😊

Tom and Jerry were good. As a kid there were many cartoons I liked even one called "Gigantor"

No TV?

Ok, we have 6 TVs.

The wife usually stays in the living room to watch TV. We have another TV in the dinning room which can be seen from the kitchen. We both have home offices and both have TVs (Well, I have two in my office). Lastly, we have a TV in the master bedroom and, yes, we go to sleep with the TV on.

As for watching habits, that's a little different. I do not normally watch "regular TV," as I do not like commercials. I like and have recorded most of the episodes of "How It's Made," Alton Brown's "Good Eats/Good Eats Reloaded," and The Walking Dead.

I spend most of my time, when at home, in my den (aka: Home Office). I learned a long time ago that my mind tends to wonder, so I actually concentrate better, if I have something on TV. I have my PC next to my TV, which is next to another PC and then a bog old 60 in TV up on the wall.

I have no issues watching the same thing over and over again. I am currently watching Star Trek VOYAGER and I believe I have watched the entire series at least 3 - 4 times. I really do not even pay attention to it, as I have seen it enough to memorize every episode. It's mostly background.

Later on tonight, the new Walking Dead comes on, so I will be watching that. After that, I am starting a series called "The Chosen." which is "the first-ever multi-season series based on the true stories of the gospels of Jesus Christ."

That will pull me into the 11 PM'ish hour, so then to sleep (probably fall asleep while watching "How Its Made," up at 5, and I work from home tomorrow (will be reviewing 4 reports and writing one) and will be back watching VOYAGER.

Yup, I know I got issues.

I used to watch so much tv when I was a kid! I was born in 74, so by 1980 and all through the 80s I watched whatever my family was watching. MacGyver, Danger Bay, news, hockey, baseball, Star Search, That's Incredible, Brady Bunch, Happy Days lol.

As a teenager I started serving the Lord and going to church, and I was mostly too busy for TV, but I watched Star Trek TNG and Baywatch religiously haha

As an adult, I started watching anything to do with medical, police, or fire. And then YouTube came along, and mainly I watch educational stuff. Now I'm in Bible college, and not much time to watch TV, but I have many hours of videos to watch each week along with about 200 pages of reading material. Old Testament survey, Total Fitness, Astronomy, Biology, Apologetics, Logic and critical thinking. Practical mathematics, Comparative religions, Biblical Greek. So I'll watch the 3 Chicago shows and that's about it. 3 hours per week. If I wasn't working and schooling full time, I'd probably watch about 2 hours of tv per day. I'd probably read for a couple hours too. I probably wouldn't be listening much to music.

As a child and teen, music was hugely important to me. I was often listening to records or tape cassettes or the radio. I don't listen much to music anymore but I love to sing and record songs. I have no idea who the popular singers are these days, not even contemporary Christian music

Thanks for your replies its kinda interesting to look back on what we watched on tv and how it kind of influenced out lives.
I was going to continue on, in nz the programming was a mixture of local shows, UK shows, and then american shows and australian shows. 'Reality tv' then started to replace dramas and sitcoms. Most sitcoms and dramas were american, I remember the sitcoms were usually nuclear family based, about a family living in one household like..the Cosby Show, Family Ties, Full House, and as time went on you got to know the family members like your own family. After all they were in your living room.

On the weekends there would be movies shown so you'd hardly ever go out to watch a movie at the cinema when you could see it free on tv. When home video came, we could rent the latest ones. We had a VCR that recorded our favourite shows. I remember pausing to stop the ads, fast fwding, and rewinding when finished!

The weekly top 20 music was music videos and every week it would count down to the number 1. Being the 80s music videos were the BIG thing. There was even one point a channel just dedicated to music called MTV but watching music vids one after the other eventually got boring!

My sister religiously used to watch the aussie soap Neighbours every week day. If she missed an episode she would record it. she'd also watch talk shows where Americans behaved really outrageously and we thought they were absolutely nutty. Surely they must be acting.

the Simpsons came out in the 90s and they were favourites with my generation for a long time as it was quite a witty cartoon that poked fun at modern (american) life but also had heart. It eventually went downhill though when it ran out of ideas lol. Repeats would show 5 times a week.

After finishing high school and going on to uni I didn't have time to watch tv as was studying, but some other favourite shows were Friends and a local soap Shortland Street. Then I suppose working I didn't really watch that much tv - there was the ocasional good show but by the time dvds came out you could watch entire series if you wanted to at any time. And no longer had to rewind them.

After becoming a christian I didn't watch much tv at all and my viewing habits changed, I watched more nature and documentary type programs, and would borrow dvds on topics I was interested in rather than dramas. There wasn't that much christian tv or channels on but I didn't really go in for the televangelism that they have on tv for some reason! I guess I was more interested in actually reading my Bible than watching tv about it.

Thank you for your question Lan;

Watched golden girls with my mom, and the normal Christmas movies with rudolph and the little puppets on there or claymation models. Watched a lot of disney movies, but mainly as a child from teenager played more games than anything else. Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Final Fantasy, Pokemon, and later on in my 15-16 years old, would play Runescape, Diablo 2, and Habbo, then furthering on from that decided to watch Star Trek original series liked that show, and Twilight Zone another favorite of mine. Sometimes today, still like to watch videos on youtube of people playing doom, or something along those lines, or awesome games done quick with people speed running games.

Now days barely play video games, still find social online via webcam/text chatting (done it for 12 years now) still interesting. it seems to me a lot of the things that were experienced in my own life when it came to doing all those things were mind numbing, and still do not compare to anything that God will give to a person, still listen to my old school music (terrible music for most people Insane clown possee, mindless self indulgence, korn, strapping young lad.

Like was stated, most of these things now are part of my old life, still like to go back and watch them and listen and see them but nothing that compared to God, and the rest his Son Jesus Christ gives in this life.

Hope to continue to serve God and for his will to be done, even if my life seems very boring, stale, and not a lot of fun compared to whatever anyone else may think about it. We can only do so much with what we are given and the circumstances we have going on.

(I hardly ever watch the news anymore unless at moms house and she has it on but still rarely pay attention to it for I know this world is passing away, it is best to keep ones mind on the eternal values of Heaven than the temporary problems of earth.) Though will listen to anyone who has anything to speak about it only for so long however until unable to bear it anymore.

Thank you for listening, and hope you all have a wonderful day. God bless.
