Plants in your churchyard?

The garden centre had a sale on the weekend so I bought some plants

I have

2 proteas
Leucodendron
Poor knights lily
Christmas lily
Gladioli
Bird of paradise

I plan to plant these at church but might have to do this on saturday when Im free. Its just finding the right spot to plant the shrubs I dont want to lose them to the lawnmower! Because last time I attempted to plant some hydrangeas and the lawn guy just mowed straight over them. It wasnt as if he couldnt see them.

Lanolin - You can make up some little flags to mark the new plants. One way is to use the rigid wire from wire coat hangars straightened out so it is about 50 cm long and tape a piece of square red, white or yellow cloth 8 cm square to the wire and place that in the ground next to the plants.

Nice idea gary but I have placed some heavy rocks by each plant instead.

Am feeling a bit disheartened that the church managers keep saying they dont want this or that, but they dont really tell me what they DO want or would like. For example, No trees, no vines, no olives, no agapanthus, no fruits or vegetsbles basically no plant grows too big or requires any sort of care. Weeds are fine because you dont have to look after them, and grass is fine because it can be mowed, even though that requires more work its that kind of mentality. How can you show people any vision when they would rather see nothing. Or maybe the cars whizzing past the intersection, I dont know.

Am thinking of doing something creative with the roadside like maybe a display bed with rainbow shaped colour flowers or maybe fish symbol, or some topiaries shaped like sheep. I cant do the Lords prayer in clipped buxus, but thats actually already been done somewhere else.

I need some inspiration Lord!

I think you already have inspiration enough, in yourself! Make a display with a fish symbol. That sounds amazing:)

Arrgh as you might have heard, the lawnmower contractor mowed over our flowering shrubs. Again. Even when I put big rocks next to them.

I asked the church secretary and elders to sort this out. On the upside, we now have a compost bin.

You could always plan yourself a picnic in the churchyard on the scheduled mowing day, and guard them :)
Or change to a new sign that reads "If you mow it, you buy it!" :)
The yard where we live now has metal rods or pipes at every tree & shrub from the previous owner. It's kinda impossible to mow over those!

Am going to plant some petunias and geraniums in church flowerbed for more colour. Am bit sad as one of the elders passed away he was a keen gardener and helped with the roadside bed. We going to miss him.
Gave out flowers today in church its lovely spring day today.

Weve got gladioli and dianthus in bloom. Sorry I havent got any photos as it says too large to upload.

I have abandoned my little garden, because Winter is coming! But you guys must be in the middle of Summer. Your gladioli and dianthus sound beautiful. For some reason this summer in England, there were alot of cut gladioli being sold. I don't know where they were grown, but they seem to be one of those flowers that live beautifully in the ground, but once they're cut they droop within a couple of days, which made me quite sad because they are such majestic plants. I do hope that you can post some pictures to give me some summertime colour now that the nights are drawing in here.

My family was in a US location recently where plants grow all year. We took a walk in a Pitcher Plant reserve area and saw thousands of the plants along the boardwalks. For persons who do not have the species close by, the Pitcher Plant actually 'eats' insects that get trapped inside the tubular structure of the plant. Fascinating to observe.

Do you have any updates on the flowers? I hope you were able to get things planted & growing nicely.

That's going to be a lovely church yard. Have you considered the Rose of Sharon bush? It is the bush referred to in the Song of Solomon.

I too agree with AtomicSnowflake in hoping you post a picture of the finished yard. I'd love to see that.

I want to put a picture of what we did
But im sad cos the church board said they didnt want anymore garden and I cant do any more so I decided if they dont want to look after their own land Im just not going to go there anymore.

They also lied to me they said yes you can do the garden so I got funding and then they turned around and said I couldnt plant anything. Well how are you supposed to create a garden if not allowed to plant anything?

What a drama. I cant deal with that level of deceit and lying and blaming when Ive been nothing but transparent with them about every single thing. So yea. They are all about power and control about that land which im sure has been robbbed and didnt care just said oh thank you but offered no practical help.

I cant go there anymore. It breaks my heart but, im not going to argue with people who wont listen.

I'm sorry to hear this, Lanolin;

It sounds like a church operations decision by the Board. But now there is a question about a decision that was made a year ago and now their decision being reversed. Did the board give you a reason?

Does the Pastor sit on the board? You may want to speak with the Pastor because this seems to be an integrity issue.

I'm praying for your situation with the garden.

God bless you.

Don't be broken hearted. You found out you weren't where God wants you to be.
They're a board. Not a church. They proved that didn't they?
You said they lied to you.
If they lied about something as minor as a garden, you can't trust them concerning anything major. You said you could get the funding for the garden they approved, then when you got the $ they did a 180. Did they keep the funding?

1 John 4:1
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

This was their test. Fascinating metaphor; Garden.
They were found wanting.
If it were me I'd rejoice! God saved me from wasting any more of my valuable time.
Now you can take your gifts God gave you and bless a real church with them. Many churches would adore adornment of their property such as you had planned.

Proverbs 12:11
Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.

(Hugs you) God give you comfort. You are blessed. Let the sadness and hurt pass. They're not worth it. Never let anyone , especially the likes of what showed its face there, to steal your joy.
Proverbs 17:22
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

No we only get funding after project is completed within a year i wrapped it up early because church board said we werent allowed to spend anymore. The funders said ok you got unspent funds it can roll over to next year. So I asked can we still do garden? Can we plant anything and the church board were like no, wait. I asked in january and they said wait till we meet (they meet every month) but now its june and still didt say anything to me, then the funder asked are you doing the project and i said no because they havent said anything so basically i asked them again and said give me a clear answer cos I have to know and then they said no. They didnt even bother to discuss anything with me and tried to blame me for not telling them anything about it, but i had told them right from the start. So i said i need to tell the funders we not doing it anymore as you not interested i. Having a garden, and you dont care.

They tried to whitewash it and obfuscate and say all this other stuff that put me in a bad light. And then blame the funders too! Thats real low. The funders fund hundreds of commnity projects all over the city called LOVE your neighbourhood.

And basically it does come out of my own pocket (and the other volunteers) first everything for the garden to get reimbursed, the funders were good on that. But the church board tried to say it was a 'venture' and it was risky and no guaantee which shows they didnt evem read my emails or look at their website or even contact them about it if they werent clear on what it was. I gave them the documents and receipts and everything. So i told the, the church isnt interested in garden anymore a real shame, you can use the money for a different project as they dont want one. Then the church board emailed and said oh we thought it was for an environment project which was rubbish, it was for love your neighbourhood and community planting.

They said we dont have the resources cos of furture property development which is rubbish again cos in the years ive been there has been ZERO property development. They cant even upgrade the kitchen. All thats been done is a heat pump been installed.

Anyway. They not intersted in listening to what I have to say. I just said to them dont call the garden a 'venture' thats an insult to the gardeners who worked to create it. (They kept calling it a venture in the emails as if i had proposed a business?!)

Thanks just want to get that off my chest cos the amount of lies and doubletalk I have to put up with by that church board which kept changing is phenomenal. They just said oh it wasnt approved. I didnt go through the 'proper channels' Well hello they did approve it cos i wouldnt have gone ahead and done any gardening and got the funding if they didnt say to get it. I wouldnt have asked them, about plants or anything if we werent going to be doing any gardening.

Grr anyway, not going back there anymore.
Thanks quintessensce. I gave them proverb which was like Gods rebuke. Proverbs 24:27-34

Sorry, I responded to an old post.

rtm3039

Hello rtm3039,

its ok. I've done it at times myself.

I volunteered workdays at church, cleaning, painting and pulling weeds and built a playground. It was not the work but the love and fellowship with my church family.

Grass, flowers and trees grow. Weeds have to be pulled. Grounds and Maintenance ministries need funding because they are only glorifying the Lord with His Creation and Beauty of His temple (church building.)

Its wonderful when we attend church and the surroundings are well trimmed. We are honoring God's Creation.

God bless you and your family.
