Falling asleep in church

Has anyone done this?
I confess I have, the other week, its kind of embarassing. I was really tired, it wasnt that the sermon was boring or anything!
our pastors son-in-law was preaching, and he was saying when he was young, as he grew up in church, he wouldnt be listening it would be in one ear and out the other, sometimes even falling asleep. The sermon was about listening to God, and talked about Samson. Samson didnt really do what God told him to do, he broke all the Nazarite vows, even though he was raised as one from birth.

I got that, but then I kind of nodded of. But at least the sermon didnt go on for hours like Paul did one time and someone fell out of the window.

How long can you sit still and listen to a sermon for, and how long are the sermons and services in the churches you go to? For me, its usually an hour and a half tops. I think its half an hour of sermon with the rest music, notices, prayer. If a meeting goes on for two hours or more, I will either fall asleep or tune out, and this goes for any meeting, not just church ones.

I find it really hard to sit still and focus for long periods of time, I think nowadays it's called ADHD. But if the subject is interesting, and the speaker is engaging, then I can sit there for hours. Don't worry yourself. Take a mental nap and pray that the person talking can learn to be more interesting;)

Why does a speaker need to change to please anyone other then the one who they serve?

When we judge what is interesting Spiritually or not interesting to us then we are only apeasing the Flesh......
The Flesh does not want to be corrected.

Because when a speaker is boring, they lose listeners.

I'm pretty certain that when Jesus spoke, he didn't lull his followers into sleep.

ps, hello Jim:)

That's just it. By what standards do we judge a speaker boring or not?

If we have to have something that motivates us emotionally in order to be able to listen then we are being controlled by our emotions and flesh.

Then we stop paying attention and miss what God wanted us to hear and it would have changed our lives.

People fell a sleep, got mad and walked out on Jesus as well.

It's not the speaker as much as the listener

I think its just tiredness on my part, but could be time of day.
I couldnt go to a church service straight after lunch in the afternoon for example. Thats nap time.

Last week went to my other church and this one usually has a longer sermon and service, but I did not fall asleep. The sermon was a bit more expository and preacher does repeat things. That can be good, but it can also kind of be redundant if its repeated over and over.

I dont officially suffer adhd, but I do notice for myself I cant sit and listen for long periods even if its the most riveting sermon, or lecture. I once fell asleep in my second cousins inaugural lecture, which was really interesting, bit missed half cos I was asleep by the end.
Movies that go on for too long, also.

I do take notes when I listen to sermons though, so dont forget what is being shared.

JEsus asked his disciples to pray at night time and they fell asleep.
But then Jesus fell asleep in the storm on the boat.

However I dont recall people falling asleep when Jesus was giving a sermon.

Jesus told parables at the beach. He was on a ship and everyone else was standing on the shore. See Matthew 13:1-3
He also gave a sermon on the mount.

I think more people listened when he was outside than in.

I often wonder why we dont have church gatherings outside especially when its good weather.

lol! Annie! I had to chuckle when I read your post. I preach 3 - 4 times a month and have one member whose eyes get heavy during the sermon. I was told later that its the Holy Spirit that gave them peace during the message and also mentioned "mental nap". Once the person let out a snore and then suddenly woke up and said "excuse me". The whole church family and I broke out laughing. lol!

Funny thing is, I tease them and ask, what did I preach about? This person is spot on and can tell me and the scripture. A long time wonderful member.

Thank you for sharing, sister, and may God bless you and your family.

There was a time a few years back when I had problems staying awake. There were physical problems involved.

It was more often at business meetings, but also sometimes during sermons.

The thing is, when I was listening intently and thinking ard about things related to to what was being said, I would drift off. At one time I was on a busines trip and dialed in to a teleconference. I was considering my part in the problem being discussed and drifted off. I started snoring. Loudly. No one there to wake me. Very embarrassing. It was jokingly referred to for several months, which did not help my embarrassment.

I have lost weight and get better sleep at night. So I am less likely to have the problem, but I do still have to remain on guard. I am also retired and do not have to attend meetings while experiencing jet-lag.

Haha, one time I had a work roadshow and it was getting to afternoon and there was speakers and pwoerpoint presentations. I started to nod off and the boss was speaking. I just could not keep awake. Was teased endlessly but i did warn them that powerpoints presentations can put me to sleep. Its just you sitting there for hours with nothing to do but sit there and stare. Its not like reading a book, at least you turn pages when you are actively reading. Your hands are doing something.

But I also think its an afternoon thing with me.

Most churches meet on sunday mornings at 10 or therabouts, not too early, not too late.
We arent to give up meeting together, but I suppose there are God appointed times to meet. People call them 'divine appointments'. Some churches have regular evening services but I'm not a night owl. I think its better to meet during the day, when you can see! Going home in the dark isn't fun, especially if you need to go home by yourself.

Good point, Lanolin;

We go through different schedules with evening Bible studies, prayer meetings and worship services. When we met in the evenings we began a bus ministry to pick up or drive home some of our church family. It was very effective and gave those who could gather an opportunity to bond and grow in Christ.

God bless you and your family.

Tonite had bible study and I was yawning like crazy I could have slept on the sofa and stayed the night at our hosts house. After a hard days work I ought to immediately have a nap but I didnt today. We are reading book of Numbers and all about the Levites offerings I notice it was mostly food, they did not have sleep offerings...

Some people have campervans now thats an idea sleep on wheels you could also have mobile Bible study.

Hi Lanolin, just wanted to ask how old you are lol. When I was younger I was a total 'creature of the night'! I could stay awake and alert until the early hours, but hated getting up in the morning! Now (and I never imagined I would ever say this), I go to bed early and get up early, eek, lol.

If I have to do anything that requires any sort of serious concentration, I do it in the morning. And if anyone wants the best out of me, talk to me in the morning when I'm most alert and attentive.

And Hi Bobinfaith, I would never dream of attending an 'evening' bible class of any sort, because I know I'd be fast asleep by 8pm lol. No matter how interesting the teacher was.:) (And I wouldn't want anyone laughing at my snoring!!!!!!!):ROFLMAO:

Blessings to you both, from an 'old woman'(y)

Am in my thirties now. I guess you can say Im more mature! I tend to wake at 5:30am because I need to be at work by 7am. Defintiely morning now...when I was younger I used to not be able to sleep all through the night had the worst insomnia.
Thankfully the Lord took me from darkness to light. Now am a creature of the day. I only have evening Bible study because I was working, if Im not I would rather have it during the day, had to give up one I started when got work full time.

My dad always worked evening shifts and would get home at 4am. He only needed 5 hours sleep but I cant. I couldnt work at night I need my beauty sleep. I learned all about sleep hygiene in dealing with insomnia. When It was so bad the doctors would give me sleeping pills/tranquilisers to literally knock me out. thank God I dont need them anymore.

I'm glad you don't need sleeping pills anymore. Natural sleep is so important. I'm currently coming out of a 'menopausal, hot-flush, sleep deprived' period of my life... And, even though I can't stay awake and party all night long lol, I'm so glad to get a good nights sleep again. I love my bed. I love to get a good nights sleep.

Even when I was younger I didnt party all night long because the parties I went to were so boring everyone just got drunk and were stumbling about vomiting in the bushes and I thought that was just not fun I'd rather go home and sleep. If thats what happens at an all-night party Id rather not go.

I mean you could party during the day and NOT get drunk. Each sunday service is like a party for Jesus. When you think about what we are celebrating.

I was only joking when I said 'party all night long':) I can barely keep my eyes open past 10pm these days. Actually, thinking about it, I was a complete horror. Which I'm not proud of. But weirdly, neither of my boys drink or smoke or do drugs. I know many parents say this, but I AM the parent who would know! Maybe they're too busy keeping an eye on me, to make sure that I'm not doing the aforementioned! If so, good.

Praise God that I'm the one (by finding Christ) who's broken the cycle. I hope so. If there's only one thing that's come out of my messed up life, i'm glad that my kids don't partake in drink, drugs and cigarettes.
