2 Cor. 1:8&9

For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life.
But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:

So we should not think it strange that we experience 'precious' trials and troubles that push us beyond limits even unto 'death to self' for if we can not handle it then we may be in a position for God to handle it. For our ability to 'get along' in this life is not an end to itself, it is not God's purpose for us.
This old life 'must die' so that God can 'raise us from the dead'.
