Global Religion: The Earth Charter.
`Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man – and birds and four-footed beasts and creeping things.` (Rom. 1: 22 & 23)
Many religions are earth/nature based, however the United Nations decided that they needed to have a Charter that would oversee all areas of society. Gorbachev, (former Russian leader) said -
`In its essence the Earth Charter shifts the focus to people on the Earth, their responsibilities, their morals and spirituality, their ways of consumption. To save humankind and all future generations, we must save the Earth. By saving the Earth, humankind saves himself; it is that easy to understand!
The idea for the Earth Charter originated in 1987, when the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development called for a new charter to guide the transition to sustainable development. However, it is not until the year 2000, that the final text was approved.
Preamble of the Earth Charter.
We stand together at a critical moment in Earth`s history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise.
To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of culture and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny.
We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of the Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations.
The Earth Charter has a paradigm shift from individualism, self-interest and separateness, to unity, wholeness and community. Steven Rockefeller was the leader steering the draft of the Earth Charter. He was a professor of Religion and Ethics expounding the virtues of a `creation-centered theology.`
`…(man) exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the creator,…` (Rom. 1: 25)
