9-4-2021 Good News Seventh Day BAPTIST, Apex NC Pastor Darwin “God’s Anger, Punishment and Grace” Isaiah 10;1-20

Our text covers the fall of Israel to their return to the promise land. These scriptures show the anger of God, the punishment of the people and the grace of God toward the people.

  • Anger of God:
  • In verses 1 to 4 God is angry toward the people because of their disobedience to Him and to His commandments. The people were evil, wicked and treated the poor people wickedly. Isaiah was there to listen to God and to warn the people of what was coming to them. Isaiah explained why God was so angry with them. Vengeance is the Lord’s for their iniquity and sinful ways. God has righteous anger against the people who refuse to obey Him. He has anger for their de-valuing the Word of God and their lack of trust in God. And anger for their willful wanting to sin.

  • Punishment:
  • God allowed other countries to defeat and to punish Israel. He let Assyria war against and defeat Israel. God had the power to give Assyria orders to punish Israel and they were to follow His orders. The Lord teaches Israel a lesson about obedience. God used Assyria to punish Israel and Babylon was used to punish Judea. God later punished both Assyria and Babylon for their disrespect toward the Lord. They exceeded their authority and God cast them down in their pride. Verses 16-19. Power is like a disease for man. Once they get power, they want more and forget the God who gave them their power.
  • Grace:
  • In verse 20 God will bring back a remnant of Israel and they shall wait on and worship the Lord. God has found Grace thru His anger, punishment and judgement on his people. Through it all, God has Grace and wants to care for his people. God said Grace would come after the punishment was completed. The Lord did promise to deliver the Israelites from their enemies. You can trust God even during the times He is punishing you. God wants great things for our lives.
God is angered when we take Him for granted and subvert His godly justice and fail to humble ourselves. He hates it when we put our wants before God and His commandments. Jesus said we are to love God and then to love our neighbors as ourselves. Both Israel and Judah failed in this simple requirement. Just like when we fail to give God glory and to walk in kindness to our neighbors. We need to have a change of heart when we are with God and walking in His Grace.

God gets this righteous anger because we don’t trust Him and we have the outright desire to simply sin. The disease of man is that when we get power, we glory in it, take credit for it and don’t give God the glory or thankfulness. We are to walk in Jesus and seek to please God the Father.

AMEN
