A Bible

Your word is like a lamp for my feet
and a light for my path.”
Psalms 119:105

The ad stated: “Wanted: young, skinny, wiry fellows not over 18. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred.”
This ad was printed on April 3, 1860, to procure riders for the Pony Express. The young men had to ride from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California – and do it in ten days (not the 25 days it took by coach!) They ran their horses at top speed, switching them often, and they were allowed only
the bare essentials of existence to keep the weight to its minimum. Interestingly enough, however, every Pony Express rider carried one thing - a Bible!

Those teenage boys were real heroes! I can't imagine what response this ad would garner today.
