There are two things a believer must do if the Holy spirit is to teach him Christ. One, he must separate soul and spirit, Heb. 4:12. Second, he must learn to rightly divide the Word of truth, 2nd Tim. 2:15.
These two things are necessary if the Holy spirit is to have the freedom to reveal the Christ that is in you.
 
Not only is the spirit, and soul needed to be separated, but also the flesh (joints, and marrow). We are to love the Lord God with all our "heart", "mind", "soul", and "strength"(Mark 12:30). Notice, the mind is not our soul. The carnal mind which is a part of the "natural man", and the "mind of Christ" dwell in two different places. One is in our "head", and the other in our "spirit", and the soul receives information from both of them, and then decides which one to believe.
If we can not tell the difference between our physical mind, from the mind of Christ we will miss out what the Spirit of God is teaching us. Of course the Word of God is the only thing that can divide these parts of man from each other. (Heb 4:12)
