Looking up the word 'assurance', I was surprised to find it used (in it's Greek form only five times in all the NT, yet it's one of the more sought out aspects of the Christian life. Here they are...

Acts 17:31 (KJV) Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Colossians 2:2 (KJV) That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

1 Thessalonians 1:5 (KJV) For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

Hebrews 6:11 (KJV) And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

Hebrews 10:22 (KJV) Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

What's more the word 'assure' is found only once in the NT...

1 John 3:19 (KJV) And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

Which is your favorite on 'assurance' and why?

Good morning, crossnote;

I read your thread, Assurance last Saturday. I enjoyed it and gave it thought, but I wanted to chew on it more before sharing.

Whether assurance, assure, much or full assurance, all peoples including believers of Christ fall short in our faith of His Assurance.

2024 has been a good year for my wife and me including those tough moments and struggles with those that surround us. Many have expressed their doubts about the outcome of their health, relationships, financials and the future. But the question is, despite all, are we still assured of God's promises, that He is with us and is in complete control of all our circumstances? Do we believe?

I visit a good friend in a nursing care facility. He is in his early eighties, was very energetic and active but his organs are failing. Yet he is always in good spirits, sitting up right eating his lunch and watching tv. He has no doubts regarding God's assurances because of a lifetime of a personal relationship with Jesus.

He ministers to me in the areas of my own personal questions regarding God's promises, certainty and assurance.

It takes a full relationship with Jesus, everyday, not just our morning or evening prayers, Bible study or Worship on Sundays, but a constant growing relationship with Him, daily.

I can't give a favorite to the variables of God Word for these reasons of each Scripture's context;

Assure is an action or verb. Assurance is a noun and representative of God. Much assurance is the growing level of God's promise and full assurance is His complete promise.

In Acts 17, the context of assurance was anointed to Jesus and perfectly designed by God.

In Colossians 2 the full assurance comes with "icing on the cake," God's promise adding comprehension and Truth to each of us.

In 1 Thessalonians 5 much assurance is Paul preaching / teaching with a high level of confidence in his personal belief in Christ.

In Hebrews 6 the full assurance is God's ultimate promises so we must go forward in our continued service of His perfect plans for us.

In Hebrews 10 is full assurance of God's ultimate promises but also equips / dresses us with purity in heart and flesh.

1 John 3 assure is a verb, or action of the Lord in His continued work in our lives, for we are continually growing in our walk to further equip us for our service to Him.

This is why I believe, but am required to continue praying, studying within my capacity in this lifetime which according to God is all beneficial to those who want to gain knowledge of His assurances.

God bless you, crossnote, and thank you for this thread.

Merry Christmas!

Bob

Merry Christmas to you and Hazel too Bob, I guess I see assurance as opposite of self confidence. Thus we abandon any self confidence and place our total hope in Christ, In this we are gifted differently and that goes for assurance/faith.

Romans 12:3 (KJV) For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Merry Christmas brother!

To me, especially as I grow older is that I "know" without any doubts that when I die, I will stand before God with a clean heart with Jesus at my side saying to the Father......Major is one of mine!

Hello brothers in Christ;

I understand both your views and they definitely minister to me. I can see assurance as opposite of self confidence. My growing pains has been my assurance of my self confidence. YIKES! Who gave me the confidence? I've learned and am still learning!

I'm seeing your thread from God's Word being His assurance. I have no doubt that I will also stand before God one day and have eternity. As God bless me with an ongoing, growing relationship in this life, His assurance will also increase my confidence in Him.

God bless you both and everyone here.
