Biblical Women of God - Presentation (1-S)

Our first woman is THE first woman, EVE, whom God made to be a companion and a helpmate for man.

Adam&Eve.jpg

Genesis 2 : 18, 21 - 22 (KJV)
18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

An important woman, as mentioned in Genesis 18 and 21, is Sarah, the wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac.

abraham-and-sarah-550x400.jpg

Genesis 18:10 (ESV)
10 The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.

Genesis 21:1-3 (ESV)
1 The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised. 2 And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him. 3 Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac.

Rebekah -
Abraham sent his most trusted servant to search for a godly wife for his son Isaac. The servant had asked God to give him a sign when he met the right woman for Isaac, that she would not only draw water from the well for him, but also for his 10 camels.

I would like to present the next 4 women together as they are the mothers of the 12 tribes of Israel. What a tangled web we weave, when we first set out to deceive. The first wife of Jacob was presented under false pretense and was not the woman he wanted. God saw that she was not properly appreciated and so blessed her with 6 sons and a daughter.

Leah, mother to Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun and Dinah

The woman Jacob desired was Leah's younger sister, she is his beloved.

Rachel, mother to Joseph and Benjamin

When Rachel couldn't conceive she gave her handmaid to Jacob.

Bilhah, mother to Dan and Naphtali

Not to be outdone by her sister, Leah gave her handmaid as well

Zilpah, mother to Gad and Asher.

rachel-leah.jpg

Genesis 29:31 And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.

Tamar (Judah’s Daughter-in-law)

The son of Judah, called Er, married Tamar but he passed away and because of tradition, the next brother, Onan, married her but he also passed away. She remained a widow for some time, but disguised herself as a prostitute to secure offspring by Judah. She had twin sons, Perez and Zerah. (Genesis 38).

5.-The-Narrative-of-Tamar-Daughter-of-David.jpg

Genesis 38:12-15 (WEB)
12 After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.
13 Tamar was told, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.” 14 She took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

The daughters of Zelophehad (Numbers 27)

They petitioned Moses and the people of Israel for their father's inheritance in the promised land, as he died leaving no sons. God's response shows He is not misogynistic and fully supports women as well as men.

Numbers 27: 1 - 8
Then came the daughters of Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, from the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and these were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 2 And they stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, and before the leaders and all the congregation, by the doorway of the tabernacle of meeting, saying: 3 “Our father died in the wilderness; but he was not in the company of those who gathered together against the Lord, in company with Korah, but he died in his own sin; and he had no sons. 4 Why should the name of our father be removed[a] from among his family because he had no son? Give us a [b]possession among our father’s brothers.”

5 So Moses brought their case before the Lord.

6 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 7 “The daughters of Zelophehad speak what is right; you shall surely give them a possession of inheritance among their father’s brothers, and cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them. 8 And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter.

Deborah, Judge and Prophetess

th

Judges 4:4-10 (ESV)
4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. 5 She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the people of Israel came up to her for judgment.
6 She sent and summoned Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh-naphtali and said to him, "Has not the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded you, 'Go, gather your men at Mount Tabor, taking 10,000 from the people of Naphtali and the people of Zebulun.
7 And I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin's army, to meet you by the river Kishon with his chariots and his troops, and I will give him into your hand'?"
8
Barak said to her, "If you will go with me, I will go, but if you will not go with me, I will not go." 9 And she said, "I will surely go with you. Nevertheless, the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory, for the LORD will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman." Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 And Barak called out Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh. And 10,000 men went up at his heels, and Deborah went up with him.

RUTH:

This fine woman was a Moabitess that married into the Jewish faith. Both she and her mother-in-law were widowed. Her mother-in-law told her to return to her people, but, Ruth refused and stated that the Israelites were her people now and that their God was her God as well. Her example of faithfulness and persistence and trust in God has been an inspiration to all. She is 1 of only 5 women mentioned in the lineage of Jesus and is the great grandmother to king David.

Ruth 1:16-17 (KJV)
16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

Elisabeth

Mother of John the baptist, her pregnancy was considered a miracle as well because of her advanced age.

Luke 1: 5 - 7 & 13 - 17

5:There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

6:And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

7:And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

13:But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

14:And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

15:For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

16:And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

17:And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Miriam - Sister of Moses, prophetess - Presentation (6-S)

Miriam was the daughter of Jochebed and Amram, and sister to Aaron and Moses. She watched pharoah's wife take baby Moses out of the river, but did not know how to look after him and offered to find a Hebrew woman who could nurse him. Miriam brought her mother who was then able to looke after her own baby.

Later in Exodus we learn how Miriam led the women singing and rejoicing with tambourines when the Red Sea parted.

Later when Miriam and Aaron questioned Moses' authority, God punished Miriam and she suffered with leprosy.

Exodus 2:5-8 (WEB)
5 Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her servant to get it. 6 She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”
8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go."

Exodus 15: 20-21 (ESV)
20 Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”

Delilah, cohort of Samson, betrayed him for money

Delilah was a beautiful woman. Samson fell in love with her, and she became his cohort.
The Philistines offered a great deal of money to betray Sanson by finding out the secret of his great strength.
Delilah agreed to betray Samson - she wanted the money.

samson-tells-delilah-about-hair.jpg

Judges 16:4-18
4 It came to pass afterward that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
5 The lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, “Entice him, and see in which his great strength lies, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver.”
6 Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies, and what you might be bound to afflict you.”
7 Samson said to her, “If they bind me with seven green cords that were never dried, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.”
8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green cords which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
9 Now she had an ambush waiting in the inner room. She said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” He broke the cords as a flax thread is broken when it touches the fire. So his strength was not known.
10 Delilah said to Samson, “Behold, you have mocked me, and told me lies. Now please tell me how you might be bound.”
11 He said to her, “If they only bind me with new ropes with which no work has been done, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.”
12 So Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them, then said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” The ambush was waiting in the inner room. He broke them off his arms like a thread.
13 Delilah said to Samson, “Until now, you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me with what you might be bound.” He said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head with the fabric on the loom.”
14 She fastened it with the pin, and said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” He awakened out of his sleep, and plucked away the pin of the beam and the fabric.
15 She said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and have not told me where your great strength lies.”
16 When she pressed him daily with her words and urged him, his soul was troubled to death.
17 He told her all his heart and said to her, “No razor has ever come on my head; for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me and I will become weak, and be like any other man.”
18 When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up this once, for he has told me all his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hand.

2 Samuel 11:1-3 (WEB)
1 At the return of the year, at the time when kings go out, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. 2 At evening, David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. From the roof, he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to look at.
3 David sent and inquired after the woman. One said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, Uriah the Hittite’s wife?”

Esther

Esther was a young woman, born of the Jews, and was an orphan. She did have an uncle named Mordecai, who visited her at the palace gates, to give her any news of the Jewish people. Esther 2:17-18 (WEB)
17. The King loved Esther more than all the women, and she obtained favor and kindness in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.
18. Then the King made a great feast for all his princes and servants, even Esther's feast; and he proclaimed a holiday in the provinces, and gave gifts according to the kings bounty.

Mary - Mother of Jesus

Mary was a young virgin when the Angel Gabriel told her that she would give birth to a son who would be a Savior to the world. When Jesus was on the cross Mary was stood below with John the Beloved Apostle. Jesus looked down and said, "Mother behold thy son, Son behold thy mother." From that day John took Mary to his house, and she lived there.

Luke 2:1-7 (KJV)
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David.
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
