Charles Spurgeon- Stop throwing the football!

A football to be kicked from man to man!

(Charles Spurgeon) Play Audio!

Two learned doctors were angrily disputing the nature of food, and allowing their meal to lie untasted; while nearby, a simple farmer was eating heartily of that which was set before him.

Just so, the religious world is full of quibblers, critics, and debaters, who, like the doctors, argue over religious controversies, without profit either to themselves or others. Those are far happier, who imitate the farmer--and feed upon the Word of God, which is the true food of the soul.

Questioning with honesty and candor is not to be condemned, when the object is to "prove all things, and hold fast that which is good." But to treat Scripture as if it were a football to be kicked from man to man, is irreverence, if not worse!

Study the Word of God; lay hold upon it, and spend your time in feasting upon precious truth! Reader, argue, if you please--but remember that communion with the Lord Jesus gives infinitely more enjoyment than disputing can ever afford you. Eat, don't argue!

A strict warning from the Holy Spirit on debating, and arguing over the word of God is a grave sin of evil pride of the heart to prove a point. Brethren, let us all repent who have done this and who continue to do this, for this brings reproach upon the word of God and makes us guilty of breaking the unity of the Spirit of Christ that the word of God has come to produce!

Dear Derek88,
It’s good to see you here brother, I feel like it’s been awhile since we’ve seen you!

Thank you for this posting as it is something that has often been on mind and is troubling to my heart.

Scripture tells us that God dislikes discord and fighting among His children.

“Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Philippians 2:3–4 (ESV)

Those that have accepted Jesus Christ in their hearts are a family. We have placed our faith in Christ and have been adopted into the family of God. I pray we can be a happy family.

God bless you and those you love.

Excellent and I agree whole heartily.

I would only add that the concept of defending the faith is called apologetics. If a person is trying to deny the inerrancy of Scripture or if they are teaching others a wrong interpretation of the Bible, and that usually manifests itself in the ADDITION to the Word of God, then it is our responsibility as believers to correct them. However, that does not mean we are to argue with the person as you can correct someone without being argumentative, hostile, or angry.

I wrote a poem similar to this sort of thing a few years ago...

DRINK

the best of pipes were sought and found,
each were laid perfectly along the ground.

fitted together with seamless perfection,
up to the faucet was made the connection.

a beautiful array of copper, from main to sink,
but all to no avail until the studied one would drink.
