Coach Bobby Bowden died Saturday at 91 from cancer. Some of you know and some probably do not care but just so that you all know, he was probably the best college football coach ever.
What you may not have known is that he was a deacon at the 1st Baptist church in Tallahassee Fl. and was one of the most committed Christians I have ever known.
He won 377 games, 2 national championships and his teams finished in the top 4 for 14 straight years in the 80's and 90's which is a college record. He did that from nothing. Florida State was a university for women to be teachers and he came there in 1976 and built a national power.
Any way, my daughter in law worked for her Masters at FSU and Coach Bowden was her advisor. In 2003 I was the chairman of Evangelism of the Seminole Baptist Association in Central Florida. My daughter in law got me in touch with Coach Bowden in 2003 and he graciously accepted our invitation to come to Sanford Fl. and speak to a group of high school athletes.
We had about 700 kids in the church and coach Bowden came and PREACHED the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and we saw 56 kids come to Christ that afternoon.
We had lunch, talked and he signed every hat brought to him, every piece of paper and every person that came to our table he greeted and spoke to.
I have never known a more kinder, graciouse and loving Christian man. He will be missed by all!
I just thought you all would like to know that there are people working for Christ with our children and grandchildren that you may not have considered.......He was one of them!!!!
