Courage is something that we admire, and as a nation we should honor those who display great valor and courage. We hear of the courage to face perilous circumstances, and there are stories of extreme heroism by soldiers, police offices and firefighters who risk or sacrifice their lives to protect the lives of others. There is courage in the moments when facing fear and danger, but there is also courage to be seen in the ordinary days of our lives. I have great respect for those who have the courage to risk their lives in battle or those willing to run into a burning building to rescue someone, but I also admire the courage that I see in those who rise up to meet each new day.
I admire the courage of mothers who work more than one job, those who work endless hours sacrificing to provide for and nurture their children, and I admire mothers who work endless hours at home caring for their families, for mothers must rise up even when they are too tired or sick to rise up, but they rise up to meet the needs of their families each day.
I admire the courage of men who rise up each day and go to work long hours, men who sacrifice their own health and their own dreams so that the dreams of their family can come true. It is not always easy to rise up each day and do all that is needed, but it is done every day by billions of people on this earth and many face great adversity and exhibit extraordinary strength and courage in simply doing what must be done.
Abraham Lincoln said, "I am a slow walker, but I never walk back." Some interpret this to mean that if we complete a task slowly and methodically but correctly we will not have to go back and redo the task. I personally feel that he understood that there is power in a new day and that we must learn from the past but we must move forward and not go back. Some days are hard, and some are even harder, but there is power found in the courage to let the day past be past and there is courage to rise up each day and find the beauty and power of that new day. I am, at times, like the turtle, I am a slow walker, but I try to move forward each day and I seek to never walk back. Progress made is progress made.
