Daniel: (2) Section 1. The Nations.

Section 1. The Nations.

The Book of Daniel is set in the time when rebellious Israel had been defeated by the king of Babylon and his army. The rulership was taken from Israel and given to the Nations, but only for a certain time. God set Nebuchadnezzar as the first `king of kings, ` but revealed Himself as the ultimate power and authority.

Many of the people of Israel were taken captive and brought to Babylon, the centre of the Empire. Daniel and his three companions were among them. Daniel records some of the significant events in their lives under the various kings that ruled.

Daniel especially was given a high rank in the Babylonian court, but he never let the pagan morals or ways affect him, for he trusted and prayed to God continually. Thus, God gave Daniel favour in the sight of kings and enabled him to interpret dreams that God wanted known. Daniel also directed kings to turn from their prideful ways and humble themselves before God.

God revealed His wisdom through Daniel, His power over the elements as the three friends walked in the fiery furnace, His mercy to those who humbled themselves, and judgment upon the prideful.

Then Daniel himself was tested to the ultimate, whether to obey man`s laws or honour God. Daniel was exonerated and God`s ultimate power and authority was revealed to the king. He sent word throughout the great kingdom that all should honour and fear the God of Daniel.

Just as a note of interest, Babylon is the root of ALL spiritual deception. It was the 1st nation to rebel against God and It is seen in the Revelation as a City and as a political player of which God destroys.

King Cyrus was said to be the one who would over though Babylon 200 years before he was born and Cyrus is the one who sent the Jews back to rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple.

Thank you for those added notes there Major. Very important especially today as the actual city of Babylon is being rebuilt.

Marilyn, there does not appear to be any rebuilding going on there due to damage by military occupation and encroachments. Saddam Hussein tried to recover the city’s lost glory in the 1970s, but his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

Now, I am NOT debating you, I only remind you of what the Scriptures tell us.

According to Jeremiah 50:39 and Isaiah 13, Babylon will never be rebuilt. Jeremiah told Seraiah to read God’s judgment on Babylon when he visited with King Zedekiah: .......
“Then shalt thou say, O LORD, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate for ever”

However, Revelation 17 & 18 tells us that there is actually a city named Babylon. So there is our problem!!!!!!

Babylon the city is mentioned over 300 times in the Bible and it always meant literal Babylon so when we come to the Book of Revelation and having it symbolize another city would be inconsistent prophetically.

So.........what do you think we do ?????

That is very interesting Major, however a lot has happened in Babylon since the 1970`s.

The Future Babylon Project.

Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the area around Babylon came under the control of US forces. Much damage was done by military vehicles; however, the US are now working with Iraq leaders to restore Babylon.

This project is called the Future Babylon project. (2009)

Those involved will involve the local community and work to create a sustainable situation. Jeff Allen of the US side said, “The idea is to develop something that is going to be here 30 – 40 years from now and has benefits for the local people. We don`t want something that will only benefit outsiders.”

“If you have 200, 000 people a year coming to this site, you will have people staying at hotels, visiting restaurants, buying souvenirs,”
Allen said. “The site is in some ways a revenue generator for the local community.”

The State Board of Antiquities and Heritage (SBAH) is the main authority responsible for the conservation of the archeological site. They are assisted by Antiquity and Heritage Police and maintain a permanent presence there.

The World Monuments Fund is also involved in research and conservation. The SBAH Provincial Inspectorate headquarters is located within the boundaries of the ancient inner-city walls on the east side and several staff members and their families reside in subsidized housing in this area.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is spending millions of dollars into protecting and restoring – Babylon and some other ancient ruins. UNESCO has printed up a well-produced brochure, with Babylon listed as the premier destination, to hand out to wealthy donors.

The Babylon project is Iraq`s biggest and most ambitious by far, reflection of the ancient city`s fame and its resonance in Iraq`s modern political and cultural heritage.

Cultural Tourism.

Cultural Tourism will become Iraq`s second biggest industry after oil. The government of Iraq is moving forward with plans to protect the archaeological remains of the ancient City of Babylon, in preparation for building a modern city of Babylon.

The project is aimed at attracting scores of `cultural tourists` from all over the world to see the glories of Mesopotamia`s most famous city.

The Babylon International Festival has a goal to relaunch art, culture and even the economy of Iraq by making Babylon a showcase of a new Iraq, a must-see tourist attraction for visitors from all over the world.

By July 2019, so much progress had been made that Babylon was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The government is going to convert the Palace Saddam built into a museum.

Thousands of people reside in Babylon, within the perimeter of the ancient outer city walls, and communities in and around them are rapidly developing from compact dense settlements to sprawling suburbia.

Most residents primarily depend on daily wage earning or have government jobs in Al-Hillah, (close by) while few cultivate dates, citrus fruits, figs, fodder for livestock and limited cash crops, although income from the land alone is not enough to sustain a family.
