First Steps in the Old Testament: A Question About the Plural

Good morning, brothers and sisters,

I apologize in advance if my question seems elementary to you. For the past few months, I've been reading the Holy Scriptures daily. I started with the New Testament, which allowed me to know Jesus and completely change my life. Just recently, I felt an inner need to start reading the Bible from the very beginning, to feel and understand God not only in the hypostasis of Jesus but also in the hypostasis of the Father.

I hadn't even started reading yet when a friend of mine asked me a question yesterday. He asked specifically about Genesis 1:26-28. He posed a question that is now a mystery to me.

Here are the words in question:
Genesis 1:26-28: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

My question is about the word "them." Does this mean He didn't create just one Adam at first?

I would appreciate your thoughts and interpretations. Perhaps this will open up a new understanding of Scripture for me.

With love in Christ,
Yurii

Yurii I do most certainly think God is replying to himself in Plurality. The Godhead. But there be others that claim he be talking to the angels. As to ( them ) it be referring to Adam & Eve. Man not only means man but also mankind. As to referring to both sexes Man or woMAN . But there be heretics that claim that there was an age gap and race of people before Adam or even present when Adam & Eve were created. For a better understanding on the subject I do recommend the Dance of life site on U tube. The word "man" in the passage below is the Hebrew noun "adam" and is used as a generic term for "mankind." It would include both males and females.

Genesis 1:26-28: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. And God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

NIV
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

I always figured that since God presumably sees all of time at once, and not just the "current" moment, he created everything - past, present and future - but since we don't perceive like that, Genesis was worded in a way we could understand but with hints to more, so to speak - like ever unfolding origami.

Good morning, friends!

I'm truly grateful to each of you for your thoughtful reflections and responses.

You know, I intentionally took a pause to prayerfully consider everything you wrote.

And honestly, your words made me feel like a little child taking their first steps in understanding the creation of the world. I realized how little I actually know! Now it makes sense why the Lord Jesus gave me a sense that I needed to learn more about the Father.

And you know, I really liked the origami analogy that LearningToLetGo wrote. Imagine that God sees time not as a straight line, but as a complex origami, where everything is interconnected. It's so interesting!

So, after reflecting, I want to share what I've come to understand, and ask if I've got it right.

Adam was one of the people God created. Later, after the seventh day, God created a woman for Adam: "Genesis 2:21-22: And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man."

Some time passed, and Eve and Adam sinned.

And here's my main question: did God banish all of humanity from paradise because of Adam and Eve's sin?

I would be very grateful for your thoughts!

With love in Christ,
Yurii

Yuri your question be some perplexing. ( Did God banish all of humanity from paradise ??? Because of Adam and Eves sin. ) what other humanity was around for your question to make sense ? The only other humanities upon the earth were now outside the garden that being the children of Adam & Eve. Unless you think there was other created people other than Adam & Eve. Yurii Adam & Eve were removed from the garden for good reason. Because their wayward hands had already partaken from the tree of enlightenment. Imagine if they got their wayward hands upon the tree of eternal life. So it was for the good of humanity that the God removed Adam & Eve from the garden. Imagine living forever in a fallen nature . Good morning,

From Prim90's posted pictures, in humanity's vain attempt to create humans, as far as I'm concerned there has never been any breakthroughs, the kind that allow the new creations to co-exist and contribute in the world.

Adam and Eve, both foolishly ate the forbidden fruit in Genesis 3:6-12, that led God to drive humanity out of paradise and into disarray to this day. Yet God still made a way out for us if we live in obedience to Him.

Now, Imagine if Adam and Eve attempted to push the cherubim Genesis 3:24 aside from guarding the tree of life. Would that have led God to forfeit Adam and Eve from life, taking away our existence today?

I believe God would still have made a way to re-create mankind and reflect God's nature. He did this with Noah and almost with Moses.

Good morning, brothers and sisters!

First and foremost, I want to clarify that in starting this topic in our group, I had no intention of creating conflict or initiating a discussion that would offend anyone. I believe that as we walk the path towards the Lord, it’s better to ask questions than to remain in ignorance.

I have absolutely no doubt that Adam and Eve are our first parents, from whom humanity descended. I was simply intrigued by the fact that in Genesis 1, God created "them" (Genesis 1:28: "And God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."), and then, later, formed woman from Adam’s rib.

Therefore, the thought came to me that God created humanity, among whom was Adam, for whom He created Eve so that he would not be alone. And after they sinned, He banished humanity from paradise. And if there were only two of them, then besides Cain and Abel, they must have had daughters, and the entire lineage begins with the sin of sexual relations within the family...

God knows everything that was, is, and will be. Even at the creation of humanity, He knew that this would happen, just as Jesus knew that the apostle would deny Him before he did so: "
33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
" (Luke 22:33-34).

There are no surprises for God, and I strongly doubt that He intended humanity to begin its existence with such a sin.
If, however, there were other people besides Adam and Eve, it would demonstrate God's perfect plan—to give people the opportunity to justify themselves without beginning their journey in a new world so sinfully. And with all this, we are still descendants of Adam, as Noah is a direct descendant of Adam, and from his three sons (which seems less sinful) the earth was repopulated, while all other people ceased to exist.
Again, I want to emphasize that these are my first steps in reading the Old Testament. I'm trying to understand every word written here, which is why I started this topic.
And in fact, in this entire discussion, I now see two much deeper questions:
First, if there were other people besides Adam and Eve, who were also banished from paradise, then it means that their sins affected all of humanity simultaneously. And it turns out that the sin of one person, in addition to having a destructive impact on that person, inevitably affects others. Moreover, the suffering for sins will come to you and your loved ones at the same time. Often, when people sins and says, "I don't care about myself anymore," they don't even consider that their actions affect their loved ones. If I had understood this 30 years ago, I would have thought ten times before making certain decisions that increasingly distanced me from God.

And second, you know, sometimes it seems that you are so sinful that God will never accept or forgive you, but this connection from Adam to Noah, and the fact that despite Adam's sin, Noah, as his descendant, became a savior for humanity, is, in my opinion, a good example that no matter how great a sin you have committed, if you return to God, He can save you. God is always ready to accept you...
You know, I won't and don’t want to develop the topic of whether there were more people than Adam and Eve—I don't want to create confrontation in a forum aimed at the path to God, not the creation of theories.

But, at the same time, I will keep these two conclusions that I have drawn:
- my sins affect my loved ones;
- everyone can be saved if they turn to the Lord
.

Knowing this will bring peace to my soul, understanding that the Lord accepts me, and also help me restrain myself every time a sinful thought comes to mind—because these thoughts will affect not only me but also my son and wife.

I thank you all for your responses; without them, these reflections and conclusions, which were probably the very idea that the Lord gave me when He prompted me to write this post here, would not have occurred.

With love in Christ,
Yurii

You have not caused any bad feelings here. It is good to ask questions.

Yurii it is your intention to cause no ill feeling. You have caused no ill feelings AS YET . But thoughts are thoughts and if left unchecked by the word the word of God they eventually lead into full blown Hersey. From what I have read in your post 10 you still seem to be in two minds at the possibility of other peoples coexisting side by side at the creation of Adam Eve. You cite the possibility of this due to where did Cain obtain his wife. IMG_4094.jpeg. Ok lets have look at that. Adam & Eve and many from the pre flood era lived anywhere up to 500 to nearly a thousand years of age. Check out the generations of Adam. Genesis chapter 5. Plenty of time for Adam & Eve to procreate and produce other children. So of where did Cain obtain his wife. He married his Sister. IMG_4094.jpeg. Incesturous relationships marriages were common practice back than. Even into the post flood era it was perfectly legal . Abraham did marry his half sister Sara . Lots Daughters did breed with their father Lot to continue their family linage. Yurii I hope that does clear up the matter of where Cain and others found their future wives. IMG_4094.jpeg. The replenishment of the old world and new world were essential, the practice did continue for quite a time all the way up to the exodus. It is not until than that God brings forth new laws forbidding such practices between family members ( Leviticus 8:6-17 ) due no doubt to the deteriorating factors within our gene pool of which know so much more about today. But still the practice has continued on within many different cultures right up to this very day . Be it incestuorus marriages to concubines- secondary wives and polygamy. Even amongst many Christian royal family’s of which birth defects are more notable due to the close family ties. IMG_4094.jpeg. Yurii I hope that has cleared up the origins of our ancestors with Cain obtaining a wife. What we now see as evil was once once seen as normal and good practice from ancient and pre flood times more so when it came to royal linage and kingship. Yours Prim

Good morning, Yurii;

No worries, brother. Your post didn't offend anyone. Many of us here strive to "receive," "not react" to questions, curiosities and opinions that will arise in such topics. Our aim is to respond in love and support each other in learning the Scriptures more, and how we apply God's Word in our lives.

What we all
learn here, we take to the Great Commission we all must tend to.

Yurii, your fellowship and representing your wife and son is respected, and has been a huge blessing here.
Your brothers and sisters appreciate
you for that.

God bless
you and keep writing.

Good morning, brothers and sisters!

Wishing you all a blessed start to a new week!

First and foremost, I want to express my sincere gratitude to each of you for your responses and engagement in my previous post. I won't be replying individually, but I want you to know that I deeply appreciate every word you shared.

I believe that the Lord used this discussion to bring two important truths to my attention, which I have taken to heart:
* My sins affect my loved ones.
* Everyone can be saved if they turn to the Lord.

I've recorded these insights in our new family journal.
Yes, my wife and I have decided to start reading the Holy Scripture together and keep this journal, where we will write down our reflections, improvement plans, and the realization of how our actions impact our family.
Understanding that our sins harm each other has become the first entry in it.

If you don't mind, I would like to continue asking my "primitive" questions about the Old Testament. My wife and I plan to gradually read through the entire Bible, and I'm sure I'll have many more questions.

Unfortunately, in our church, as the priest explained to me, and in Ukraine in general, weekly readings of the Old Testament are not conducted in the same way as with the New Testament, where the priest explains the meaning of the Holy Scripture step by step. Therefore, apart from this forum, I don't know where else I can turn with my questions. And as the first two chapters of Genesis have shown, I will definitely have many questions.

Thank you for your support and understanding. May the Lord bless you all!

With love in Christ,
Yurii

With love in Christ,
Yurii
Yurii how long have you and your family been Christians . Upon studying the Old Testament I find both the Septuagint and Masoretic Old Testaments be essential for further study. Both have their advantages to better understanding the Old Testament. What Christian literature do you have access to in the Ukraine. I’ve read occasionally that many churches have been closed and some clergy put under government arrest. What be the truth of the matter on that
