Gifts of the Spirit - 1 Corinthians 12

Gifts of the Spirit - 1 Corinthians 12

The Nine Gifts of the Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12 and 14 are:

Word of Knowledge, Word of Wisdom, Discerning of spirits, which are Revelation gifts.

Gift of Faith, Working of Miracles, Gifts of Healings, which are Power gifts

Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues, prophecy, which are Utterance gifts

Revelation Gifts -

Word of Knowledge:

Facts of the past or present concerning people, places or events that are not known, but are divinely revealed. This is the gift of the Word of Knowledge, which is completely supernatural, it is not ‘knowledge’, we can all receive through the Word of God, nor what comes by study or intelligence that is inherited. Some examples in the Bible are:

Mark 2:6 But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, 7Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? 8And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?

John 4:16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: 18For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. 19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

Acts 5:1But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. 3But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Word of Wisdom:

This revelation of the outcome or future of a situation. It is divinely revealed supernatural wisdom, concerning fact about people, places or events, not a natural or learned wisdom. It is the purpose or perfect will of Go to solve a particular problem or situation. Many times more than one gift is in operation, such as the word of knowledge and the word of wisdom working together.

John 6:70 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? 71He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

Matthew 17:27Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you

Acts 27:10And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.
Acts27:31Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved

Discerning of Spirits:

Discern – see. To see into the spiritual realm or hear with your spiritual or physical eye and ears. This is not the gift of discernment, or judging others, but the supernatural divine ability to see spirits, whether they be godly or evil. The revelation of Discerning of spirits comes by seeing it, whereas the other two gifts of revelation comes by knowing it.

Acts 7:55But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Matthew 17:1And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, 2And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. 3And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

Revelation 7:1And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. 2And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea

Power Gifts

All of the Holy Spirit’s Gifts are sovereignly imparted and received for a certain situation at a certain time. The Spirit will use anyone He chooses who is yielded and willing to act in faith what the He wants done.

Gift of Faith

The gift of faith is a special faith which is by the supernatural power from the Spiritthat is suddenly dropped into a person to receive something that is impossible to achieve on behalf of another person. There may be countless situations in people’slives and he is suddenly enabled to believe and receive the answer for them. This is not the same faith that can be developed in any person as in 2 Thessalonians 1:3”your faith groweth exceedingly’’but is the Holy Spirit’s gift and the person is the vessel used.

Mark 4:39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Acts 3:3When he saw that Peter and John were about to go into the temple, he asked them to give him something. 4Peter, along with John, looked him straight in the eye and said, “Look at us!” 5So the man Lit. hewatched them closely, expecting to get something from them. 6However, Peter said, “I don't have any silver or gold, but I'll give you what I do have. In the name of Jesus Christ from Nazareth, walk!” Other mss. read stand up and walk. 7Then Peter Lit. hetook hold of his right hand and began to help him up. Immediately his feet and ankles became strong, 8and he sprung to his feet, stood up, and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple, walking, jumping, and praising God.

He said ‘Look at us’. He suddenly had the faith that this man would receive what he needed. In this instance it was also coupled with the gift of healing. It was their custom to go to temple regularly but this day the Spirit of the Lord had a special gift to use Peter in.

Gifts of Healing

Gifts of healing is plural. The Lord heals in different ways and uses people in various ways also. Everyone does not operate in the same way. I’ve known of a person that seem to get more blind and deaf people healed than any other problem, yet another that is used much in the healing of cancer or another disease. It is the tangable power of God flowing through and out of the person into the one needing to be healed. The healing is not obtained by any wisdom of man or medical practice but is totally supernatural. has nothing to do with medical or natural healing but is totally supernatural

Acts 5:16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

Luke 4:38And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. 39And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

Luke 5:15 Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses

Working of Miracles

The gift of miracle is used in the same way. The supernatural power of God flows through them in a miraculous way to work a miracle on behalf of another person. It is not the same as just receiving a miracle by faith by the person with the need.

2 Kings 6:5But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed 6The man of God asked, "Where did it fall?" When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float

Acts 19:1And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: 12So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

Acts 9:37And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. 38And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them. 39Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. 40But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.

Utterance Gifts

Prophecy

Prophecy is supernaturally receiving a spontaneous message from the Spirit of God and speaking it out to the congregation in their known language. A prophecy contains a message from God for edifying, or building up of the Body of Christ. All may prophecy in this manner, which is simple prophecy and does not contain predicting of the future.

1 Corinthians 31For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

1 Corinthians 14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy

Prophecy is to be judged to see if it lines up with the Word God; the Spirit and the Word will never contradict each other. We judge what was prophesied, not the person who gave it.

1 Corinthians 14:3But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

1 Thessalonians 5:20Despise not prophesyings.

In New Testment times prophecy operates differently than it did in the Old Testament. We must remember as born again Christians, we are now led and directed by the Spirit of God, not by prophecies.

Romans 8:14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Certain people may give a prophecy that includes the will of God in some future situation in someone’s life. This is only to be confirmation of something the Lord has already spoken to a person. The person who it was intended for can receive it and do as the Spirit leads and it will come to pass. If they reject it or do not co operate with the direction of the Holy Spirit it will not come to pass.

For instance, if it is prophecied over you that you are to become an evangelist and the Lord has never spoken to you about this calling, don’t try to do something you are not called to do, it will fail. If the Lord wants you to do anything, for that matter, listen and He will tell YOU. But if you know the Lord has spoken to you about being an evangelist and it is confirmed by prophecy, you will still have to prepare by seeking the Lord, study, and training in His Word or it won’t happen if you do not co operate in this direction. We do have out part in it too.

Acts 13:2As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. 3And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

Divers kinds of Tongues

Divers (different) kinds of tongues is the supernatural ability from the Spirit to spontaneously speak out a message from God to the congregation in a language unknown to the speaker. This is a message that is given to the people and is used in a different way than praising or praying to God in a heavenly or unknown language.

1 Corinthians 14:39Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues

When a person receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit they have the ability to pray in tongues. This is a different operation of the same gift but needs no interpretation when praising or praying to God as in Acts 2, but only when speaking to other people in the congregation. There are many reasons a person needs to praise and pray in tongues in their private devotions which you can read here

1 Corinthians 14:2For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Interpretation of Tongues

Interpretation of tongues is the supernatural ability from the Spirit of God to interpret a message that was given in tongues in his own known language. The person giving the message in tongues may interpret or another person may do so in order for the congregation to understand what was said. The gift of tongues plus interpretation of tongues is the equal to prophecy.

1 Corinthians 14:27If anyone speaks in another language, only two or three at the most should do so, one at a time, and somebody must interpret.

Thank you GodSpeaks for all the time and effort you are putting into this thread. It is surely a blessing .

Praise the Lord, glad you enjoyed it. I just wanted to touch on the basics for those who were curious about the gifts.

Notice something interesting when it comes to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Not everyone is given the same gift, so when you see a room full of people and they are all speaking in tongues for example, then that is not from God because not everyone gets the same gifts.

The gifts of divers kinds of tongues is speak out a message to the congregation in a language unknown to the speaker. Everyone does not operate in that gifts.

But that is not the same as praying to God in a heavenly or unknown language which is recieved when a person receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This promise is given for anyone who wants to recieve and if a great help in our prayer life.

Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.

God knows everything you are about to ask, even before you pray, so speaking in a tongue that you or anyone else cannot understand is unnecessary and not a single occurrence of a Christian praying to God in an unknown tongue is found in entire Bible.

On certain occasions it was needed in order to overcome the language barrier, and every single occurrence of tongues in Scripture was in known languages that others could understand. For example, Acts 2:9-11 records sixteen different language groups who were present as the Spirit-filled disciples stepped outside the house to start witnessing.

Let us take a close look at 1 Corinthians 14, in which the tongues problem is brought into focus. Over half of the verses in this chapter mention the words edify, understanding, learning, or teach. It is obvious that the Corinthian church was not using the gift as it was supposed to be used. Over and over Paul urged that tongues be used only to teach the barbarian, unbeliever, or unlearned. Apparently some were creating great confusion by speaking any foreign language they knew, even while others were talking, and also when no one present could understand the language they spoke.

The burden of the entire chapter is that no one use the gift of tongues except to edify someone who could not be reached otherwise. Interpreting of tongues was also to be utilized only for instructing those who could not understand without a translation.

1Cor 14:
Verse 4, "edifieth the church."
Verse 5, "except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying."
Verse 6, "except I shall speak to you ... by knowledge."
Verse 7, "except they give a dis-tinction in the sounds ..."
Verse 8, "if the trumpet give an uncertain sound ..."
Verse 9, "except ye utter ... words easy to be understood."
Verse 11, "if I know not the meaning of the voice ..."
Verse 12, "seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church."
Verse 13, "pray that he may interpret."
Verse 14, "my understanding is unfruitful."
Verse 15, "Pray with the under- standing ..."
Verse 16, "seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest."
Verse 17, "the other is not edified."
Verse 19, "that I might teach others."
Verse 20, "be not children in understanding."
Verse 22, "tongues are for a sign ... to them that believe not."
Verse 23, "unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?"
Verse 26, "Let all things be done unto edifying."
Verse 27, "And let one interpret."
Verse 28, "If there be no interpreter, let him keep silence."
Verse 30, "Let the first hold his peace."
Verse 31, "that all may learn ..."
Verse 33, "For God is not the author of confusion."
Verse 34, "Let your women keep silence."
Verse 35, "if they will learn anything ..."
Verse 40, "Let all things be done decently and in order."

Those who read this chapter of 1cor 14 for the purpose of finding ecstatic utterance can locate a couple of verses which seem to gave them support. But when those verses are studied in the context of all the rest of the chapter, and with an actual foreign known language in mind, they all can be seen to harmonize. Paul's discourse here is built around his contention that "tongues are a sign ... to them that believe NOT." Verse 22. So the true gift of tongues is given to reach the lost in their own known language.

Imagine how beautiful it would be if you and I went to a foreign country and went deep into the forest and we found a community of people living there, and they spoke a language we did not understand, but then miraculously you began talking about Jesus to them in tongues and they understood everything you said, and as a result, they accepted the good news about Jesus. Wow, that would be so amazing :)

I have closed one discussion on the subject of tongues. This one will be closely watched. Any ad hominum attacks will NOT be tolerated!
