The Hebrew word for pure here is tsâraph - in looking at the meaning I see that pure here is speaking in the sense of being pure after a refining process. Gold and silver are made pure through great heat, several times each time more impurities are removed.

Our first impressions of God's words are likely to have impurities as well. We must read and reread God's word so as to remove these impurities. It also follows that when we apply God's word at first it may not be as pure and must be further refined. So in this sense we see it is a process of understanding as we come to see and are able to apply God's pure words to our lives.
