How can we know?

On the one hand, we know that we are promised answers if we pray according to God's will. 1 John 5:14, John 14:13 (the phrase "in My name" may be a whole topic on its own).
But on the other hand, we are told to believe we have already received when we pray. Mark 11:24

This suggests that we have to know what God's will is before we pray.

So HOW can we know what God's will is for us as individuals?

So often I feel like I'm throwing prayers at a dart board, hoping to hit whatever God's will is, and if I get it right, then I'll receive it. But that isn't really faith, is it? So often I've thought, "Maybe it's just God's will for me to struggle and feel helpless all my life". But... well, I hope that isn't true. But how is it possible to know what is His will? Why doesn't He make it a little more obvious?

Good morning, rikdo;

I don't mean to get off topic but isn't U2 from Ireland? They're one of my favorite bands, 4 guys who have remained friends since high school and performing together all these years. That's amazing.

In my personal relationship with God I believe it's all God's will and knowing our needs before we pray. He desires to hear directly from us because He wants us to open up all our thoughts, confession and desires to Him. It's a relationship one on one with the Father.

God makes obvious but works "slowly but surely" to prepare us for His answer to our prayers.

I have experienced when God says no it's because He knows what's best for me. I never have to guess with God because I choose God, trust and rely on Him as He guides me to the answers of all my prayers.

I hope this helps a little, rikdo.

God bless you and Happy New Year.

Bob

Matthew addresses this exact situation. 😃

7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. - Matthew 7:7-8

Study Romans 12:1-2 and put your trust in God. If you walk in the Spirit and keep yourself focused on God at all times as 1 Thessalonians 5:16-28 exhorts us, then your daily life will naturally follow God's will, and you'll be amazed at how God works silently in the background to provide everything you need to perform His will.

As said 'in my name' is a big topic. I understand it to be to be 'in Him praying' for He said that He will be with us even in us and if He is in us and we focus our senses on His Word we will desire the right things which He will perform. The problem being the battle of our old man. However if we can relax and rest in His control hindsight will confirm that He really was granting our desire but we didn't understand it at the time. I think our desire to be led by seeing the path before us is a missed desire for if we could see it clearly it would not accomplish the attribute of faith which really a key in Him being our Lord, for if we knew everything who would be doing it, us or Him?
