I need your advice brothers and sisters

I have been praying about this and don't know what God is telling me and I will continue to pray about it but because of my broken shoulder and recovery probably going to be 6 weeks to a year from what I have heard.. is it wise to find a job or do you think I should go on disability. I have been arguing with my father about disability because he tells me once I go on disability I can never work again.. is that true? I've also heard this from a few other people but what if I am just healing after an injury like mine? But it beats having to sit a home and not get paid and be depressed.. even if it's some $$.. what do you guys think I should do?

I am not sure if the disability payment is from your government or some kind of private scheme, but perhaps you should ask whoever would be providing it what your future prospects would be regarding work if you did receive a pension now. Surely they would give the best advice. I know that a friend of mine in Australia who is chronically unwell (she has incurable lifelong conditions) did not initially want to go on a disability pension because she felt the same - that it would mean she would therefore always be on it. (But in the end it was the best thing for her, so she did). This of course would not necessarily be the same for those whose conditions were only temporary.

Has your doctor or any treating specialists given you any indication of long term affects from your injury? They are also quite possibly the people to ask. There would be information online also, if the sites are reputable and reliable, that may help you decide. Also, will getting a job in any way affect, or could, how well or quickly your injury heals? This is a major consideration, especially if the best thing for you at the moment is lots of rest. Hope all this is helpful and you are able to obtain the info you need and make a good decision. And that you heal well.

I dont know your govt, what it provides, in nz we had a sickness benefit, and an invalids benefit. The sickness benefit got scrapped and it all got lumped into a jobseekers benefit, but it wss just renamed, it was basically the same. I think the govt just did not want people abusing it and faking illness to get out of work. The invalids benefit, as far as I know, was for permanent conditions.
While the sickness benefit meant if you recovered you could go back to work if your doctor gave you the all clear. you had to check in with your doctor every 3 months or so so they could advise you. My advice is to have a chat with your doctor about it. And also think about the kind of work you could do, whether part time, causal or full time, what you are ready for. It might be, you focus on recovery and do voluntary work for a while, and then you not under pressure or stress with work commitments while your body gets strong again.

In the meantime even if you dont have any income coming in, do not worry, God will provide all your needs.

It seems to me your dad is worrying over the stigma of having a son on the benefit, maybe, but it just depends on you and your doctor and you agreeing what you are fit and capable of. Some people just want to stay on the benefit and fritter it away because they have labelled themselves invalid but I think theres all kinds of work people can do if they put their mind to it.

Hello Godiswithme;

When you were working your paycheck was already deducting SDI - State Disability Insurance. You are entitled to receive disability. Your doctor will submit your condition to the employment develop department, enabling you to collect disability for 6 months. At the end of 6 months your doctor will submit an update of your condition allowing you to collect an extension up to 6 months.

This does not mean you cannot work the rest of your life. The whole purpose of SDI is to provide you with supplemental income while you are healing and eventually going to back to work. You are going to get better.

While you are collecting disability, PRAY about getting involved with serving God, for example, with careful moderation because of your right shoulder, doing visitations to the elderly at senior home care. They love to have visitors. Serve lunch or dinner at food pantries. God always feeds the hungry who call out to Jesus. God always provides opportunities to serve those who need servants to help others.

Then, build your portfolio with these projects so when you go back to work, your future interview will see in your resume that you have been pro-active, "doing something" while you're out of work. This will go a long way with your future employer.

We're all praying for you, brother, that the Lord will bring the shoulder specialist and you together to repair your shoulder. In the meantime, be at peace. Afterall, God is with you, Godiswithme.

God bless you and your family.

Thank you so much brothers and sisters! I love this place because honestly without you guys I'd feel lost all the time haha I know that is not completely true because I have God but it does help to have other people I can talk to especially fellow Christians which makes it even better! I will talk to my doctor and see what he says and Bob that actually doesn't sound like a bad idea because if I collect disability and serve God in that way.. what you mentioned about working in a senior home care. I've worked at a senior home care in the past and absolutely loved it.. and I do miss it so I think I'll pray on that and see what God wants to do but that sounds like it would be the best thing for me to be around that kind of environment while I am recovering from surgery.

Since you live in the USA, you are paying into the Social Security Insurance program.

I am not an expert but I do not think that SSI is going to be something that you qualify for.
From the SSI website....https://www.ssdrc.com/disabilityquestions3-24.html

"The person's disabling condition must last at least one full year while being severe enough to make it impossible for them to engage in work activity. "

If you were employed. then you may have been paying for "Short term Disability" which is usually available after you have used up all of your sick days, Personal days and vacation days. Then it pays 60% of your normal salary.

"Long term disability" then pays from 90 days on to your recovery is complete.

None of those disqualifies anyone from working again. They are designed to support you until you can go back to work.

Both, short term and long term are insurance plans that you must choose to pay for hoping that you will never have to use them.

If you were injured on the job, your employer's worker's compensation insurance should pay your wages. If not, California has state disability insurance. Other states do not. You may look into applying for social security disability. It can take 90 days to six months to process. It is usually sought by people with long term or permanent disabilities. You may go off of SSI disability if you become healed at some point.

You might look into applying for food stamps, if you have no income and your savings are gone.

You might try talking to the church leaders at the church you belong to. Most churches have discretionary or benevolence funds available for these kinds of situations in life.

I have severe arthritis in my right shoulder. I just had my 4th surgery this past December and the next step is total joint replacement.
My advice is simple. Stay as active as you can. If you can find an employer that will hire you for a job you can do, then you should do it. If you cannot find a job that you can do or simply cannot work, then find another way to stay busy. The less active you are the more likely you are to get hammered with depression/anxiety.
This is especially true given that the shoulder is an extremely complex joint that helps with general movement, balance, and even breathing.
In this and all things look to Jesus. He will give you the tools you need to truck on.

Just want to encourage you.
Many people because theybe never had any health problems will look down on people that do. Dont let that faze you. There may come a time when THEY cannot work anymore because of old age or frailty or whatever reason. GOd knows just how fragile our bodies can be and the devil sure does what he can to damage them.

Your focus is on redeeming this time with Jesus. Healing time. Time spent with Him. Work on your soul. God will look after you and when your body is better He will give you the work, the ministry. Think of this time as preparation and learning. However long it takes. Moses was 80 when he led the israelites out of the red sea. Paul had to spend 14 years learning in arabia before he was sent out on missions. Joseph spent what how many years in prison and then it was 7 years feast, 7 years famine.

Many people dont understand that our bodies need rest. I had a workmate boast he worked 11 years without a single holiday. I was like what? You must really love your job. But he is paying for it now with health problems due to constant strain on his body. God wants us to rest every seventh day (sabbath) and every seventh year. If you skip these and work straight through, thinking that you can just push on you dont leave time for God to enjoy it with Him, it will catch up on you. GOd wants that time, its His time with you. Dont rush, learn patience.

Am saying this from my own experience. I am not going to say what you 'should' do. LOrd knows many people tell me what I 'should do' but they are not me or live in my body. GOd knows you better than I do. He knows best as Hes the potter we are the clay. Ask the potter what His plan for you is.

Will tell you a funny story. One time when I was out of work and mum was nagging me to find a job. I said ok I will go work in a pub in London then, they are looking for people.
Well it turns out God doesnt want me to work in a pub or be a prostitute or work in any job just because Its a job that pays money. So my career as a escort or barmaid was never to be.
