I really was listening, Pastor

Is your bible a dust gatherer?

Is your bible a dust gatherer
A shelf filler
Forgotten in the dust of time?
On the middle shelf for easy access
Or hidden on the top shelf
out of sight out of mind?
Have you discovered within its pages
The why, who and how?
A romantic novel
A historical anthology
Stories of battles and victories
Over sin and hell?
Parables inscribed to make it easily understood,
Have you discovered
wells of living water
For body and soul?
An instruction book for living
A road map for life?
Biographies, a lineage
Of the Son of God?
A plan for life
Nuggets of wisdom
Action thriller
Romantic novel
See 2 Timothy 3.16,
The wonder of creation explained,
And what’s going to happen next?
Is your bible
Not cake just for special occasion
But manna for daily life
A weapon in the fight of good over evil
A book just to dip in?
Or a must read
Read, over and over again?
Have you a favourite verse memorised?
A quote that fits the occasion
Or a poem , sonnet recited
To share the authors mind,
Still the book most sold
In the whole world
Does your bible still look brand new
Or scruffy with pages dog eared
scribbled over
highlighted chapter and verse?
The Bible a special book gifted for you, Direct from God.
Your own Bradshaws**
Revealing time, date, place,
And what we’ve got to look forward to when He comes again
Probably the greatest story ever told
Your word is a lamp for my feet.*
You’ll never know though
Unless you take it down
Open the pages
And take a look!

*Psalm119:105

Hello Alan;

Your poem and title caught my attention. I can see how the poem poses questions to the Christian or unbeliever who is not discipled in God's Word by their attitude. They may as well treat a copy of the Bible as a shelf warmer.

But I confess I'm still a learner, so for my own understanding what is the connection between your poem and the title, I really was listening, Pastor

God bless you, brother Alan.

Sorry I should have explained:-
The pastor said while he was preaching, he looks out on the congregation seeing rapped attention except for me who was tapping away on my phone
My reply was
I was listening but I had to write some notes before I forget (at my age a problem)
Quite often it’s inspiration for a poem, being dyslexic I find the phone a good way to take notes,
This resulting in the phrase becoming a bit of an “in“ joke
And nothing to do with the poem really
