Mark 12:41-44 ESV

And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

Can some one please explain this verse?

Am I missing something here?

What’s the point of this message that the widow gave out of what she lacked?

You can’t give what you don’t have, therefor it seems strange to me.

It is like going by a home for orphaned children who are hungry and you have in your pocket 1 million dollars.
You feel the need for those children so to help them out by giving $1.00 to their cause.

Another person comes by and sees the same thing. In his pocket is all he owns and it is $1.00.
He gives the $1.00 to help those children.

Who gave more????

She sacrificed when she gave. The others gave what was easy to give.

When you are rich, you can afford to give and still have plenty left over for yourself.
When you are poor you give all you have. God sees this and rewards you accordingly.

I would often come across this divide of attitudes between the wealthy and the poor (or the have and have-nots). The rich looked down on the poor for not contributing enough or as much as they did. The poor gave as much as they could and often left with nothing for themselves to live on.

Yes that there spoke to me thanks
Thank you for bringing up this question. My having to answer it allowed that passage to speak to me as well in a new way. The message I got was, God honors the sacrifices we make for Him and others. I found it interesting that the animal sacrifices in the OT were for sin, but now our sacrifices are to show love, just as Jesus' sacrifice was for sin, but also to show His love for us.
