Hello brothers and sisters;

Special Christmases was when our family (Dad, Mom and my siblings) was stationed overseas in England and Germany. We attended Christmas Eve worship service or Christmas morning service.

During the winter it snowed where we lived (Rhein Main Air Force Army Base.) Dad got the idea from a friend in Germany to hang our Scottish Pine tree from the ceiling. It would rotate slowly like a mobile. On the bottom of the tree we hung angels hair (very carefully) to make it look like it was on a cloud. Underneath was a heart shaped coffee table where we put all the presents.

This was special as kids. I do remember there was a feeling of a spiritual celebration, Jesus Birthday.

God bless everyone and Merry Christmas.

Back many years ago, when I wuz a little kid, we wuz so poor that we couldn't afford Christmas presents, so we all made presents fer each other and wrapped 'em up in newspaper. We put tablet paper tags on them gifts with family names. My Dad got a set of wool socks that Mom made for him. Mom got a center piece for the table from all of us made of garden flowers, small branches, berries, ferns and an abandoned bird nest from a pine tree. My sister got a scarf for winter that Mom knitted and I got a wool pull over winter hat that Mom knitted fer me. Them wuz hard times but we had somethin' that lots of families didn't have - each other. Our Christmas tree wuz small and sat on top the fireplace mantle with just one ornament.

A 'Cartridge in a Bare Tree'.

The first Christmas I can remember, was when I was a small child. My Grandmother did all the baking, and her Christmas Cake, and puddings were yummie. She used to put silver six pences in the puddings.

I knew it was my mother who put the pillow case on the bottom of our beds.

Waking up on Christmas morning was very exciting! Before I opened my eyes I wriggled my feet around, to see if the pillow case had arrived.

Then I would open my eyes and open the pillow case. The first thing I pulled out was a soft animal, it was a rabbit, dressed in blue, and I was over the moon with him and called him Snowball.

Every year at the bottom of the pillow case, were walnuts and tangerines, and a Rupert Bear Annual book.

Good morning, Cosia;

What you described is very magical for a child at Christmas. My parents filled stockings with our names on it. Of course, the word magic and receiving stuff can be frowned on if one looks at it that way.

It was but one time a year of children being children in our home, except perhaps a birthday. As we grew older we learned each day was worship to Jesus and our gifts were serving Him, lifting up a song or giving to others.

For now we have a 7 year old niece and we don't want to take that "child at Christmas" away from her.

The scenario of what was once a childhood is much different today for many of us. It's more focused on the birth of our Lord and Savior but I believe it starts with the eyes of a child.

God bless you, Cosia, and Merry Christmas.

German Christmas?
Must be a cool experience.

When I was a kid, I always remember Christmas having a specific feeling. And as I got to be teen and a pre teen to an adult, the feeling gradually wore away. I guess it's that "magical" feeling that people typically describe.

Now as a mother, I look forward to keeping Christmas focused on Christ. Admittedly, in the past, this effort has bordered on panic; I am adamant about keeping Christ as the focus. It's difficult with all expectations of toys and games. But, I'm starting to find the balance and my children really enjoy celebrating Advent, and St. Nicholas Day. These times I treasure.

I just LOVE when you talk about being a mom and the responsibilities regarding proper Christian teaching. WOW.
For someone like me who comes from dysfunction... reading how you approach the HEAVINESS of parenting is very moving to me.

I remember great times as we (parents and brother and myself) went on a boat to New Zealand (from Australia) which took four days. That was so exciting. And then being with our grandparents by the sea. I had a card with little `windows` that you would open each day till you got to Christmas day. I received knitted dolls clothes from my grandmother. and a book for Christmas.

My grandparents (& my mother) came out from Scotland by the Church denomination to start an Apostolic (from the Welsh revival) movement in Australia and New Zealand. Money was scarce, as many of you experienced also, but being with family and going to a church meeting to celebrate the Lord`s birth was the focus.
