Mark 2:21-22 (KJV) No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

Luke 5:36-39 (KJV) And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

Any one want to take a stab at the point our Lord is making here? The context appears to be fasting and Jewish customs.
 
The old covenant that required fasting simply didn't apply while the bridegroom was with them. Instead of fasting, it was a time to feast and rejoice until after the bridegroom is gone, then they can return to the former.

In the presence of the Lord:

Revelation 21:5 Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful."

I can elaborate further if necessary, but will leave the givens to everyone to ponder and discern.

I think you are correct. It is about TRADITIONS!.

"No man also seweth a piece of new cloth".
The traditions of the elders is in view here. Particularly concerning eating and drinking, and fasting, things before spoken of and which took place which were new things when compared to the commands of God.
Some of them were of very short standing, devised in, that age; and most, if not all of them, were since the times of Ezra.

"On an old garment"
The moral and ceremonial righteousness of the Jews, in traditional obedience to the law of God signifying, that the former were not to be joined with these, to make up a justifying righteousness before God; which were not sufficient for such a purpose, either singly, or both together.

"else the new piece that filled it up, taketh away from the old, and
the rent is made worse".
So then if the attendance to the traditions of the elders, the Jews were taken off from, and neglected the commandments of God then oftentimes the commands of God were made void by these traditions.

So then, the old garment of their own righteousness, which they thought came from following the Law, which was very ragged and imperfect of itself, instead of being purer and more perfect, became much worse, even for the purpose for which it was intended.

How would you then handle Lu 5:39 in the light of your explanation?...

39 "And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, 'The old is good enough. "

I'll agree with the first part of what Calvin says (in bold)...

"Though commentators have tortured it in a variety of ways, I take it simply as a warning to the Pharisees not to attach undue importance to a received custom."

I really am befuddled over these verses,

I have no problem with that. You see....we (Humanity) like what we know. We are reluctant to learn anything new because we are comfortable with what we know,, even if that is wrong.

"Old Wine" = "Old Religion".

God brought something NEW to MAN in the Lord Jesus Christ....."The Gospel".

Jesus did not come to the world to patch up old garments. He did not come to patch up the Law. He came to pay the penalty of mans sin by dieing on the cross. Then He rose from the dead so that He could place on those who belive in Him a robe of righteousness.

IMHO.....THAT is the NEW WINE = of the gospel!

The New Wine of the gospel must be placed in the new wine skin of grace and not into the old skin of the Law.

Christ came to give man something NEW and He did that by saving us by faith through grace.
