Playing A Game Windowed

I'm playing a trial version of an older game that doesn't support 16x10. I would like 1680x1050, but if that's not possible I'd at least like to play it windowed so that the ratio is right. How can I make it open windowed?

Thing is, when I click on the exe, it opens a browser looking window that asks me if I want to continue the trial or buy the game now. So I think maybe editing the exe file might not work? I tried putting -window at the end of the target before and it caused a blue screen and reboot.

Maybe use the monitor settings to pinch the picture from side to side?
 
Yes, I did it! In the NVidea settings I told it not to "scale". So the game plays the 4:3 ratio, with black bands on the sides. :)
