Sabbath 01/06/2018 Seventh Day Baptist Edgewater Pastor Keith sermon “His Goodness” John 11:1-47

Everyone is going to die. The Bible says in Hebrews, it is appointed for men to die once and then face judgement. At Lazarus’s funeral many people were crying but some believed he would rise again at the last day of judgement. His sister Martha believed this. Jesus then told her that Lazarus would rise again now. This is after Jesus didn’t prevent the sickness or the death of Lazarus. Jesus waited four whole days after He was told of the sickness, before He went to see Lazarus. Lazarus was a close friend and special to Jesus too. Lazarus was dying but Jesus ignored this and waited a long time before He went to go see him.

When Jesus finally went, there in the grave lay Lazarus. When Jesus said “Lazarus come forth”, Lazarus rose from the dead. Jesus had given Lazarus a testimony to tell people. Lazarus became a powerful witness for Jesus Christ. Many people turned to Jesus because of Lazarus’s story of God’s power in his life.

Jesus loves us too. He calls us friends and loves us. Jesus want to make our life count for something. He wants to give us a story, a testimony to share with others. We are to share our testimony of God’s power. We are to share our testimony of the mercy and blessings Jesus shows us. We should rejoice when we face tragedy, loss or hurt. These are opportunities for God to show His grace and power in our lives. Then we have a testimony to tell others of Jesus’s love for us. When we are weak, God makes us strong.

The reason Jesus waited four days was because He wanted Lazarus to have a testimony of Jesus’s power over Death. When we are baptized, we die to sin and get a new life in Christ. When we are raised out of the baptismal water, we are given a promise that just like Lazarus rose again, so shall we rise again.

AMEN
