Sabbath 1/13/18 Seventh Day Baptist Edgewater Pastor Keith sermon “The Last Supper” Matt 26:17-30

Many artists try to portray the Last Supper scene. Each artists uses his own paint brush to make the scene in his way. In the same way, each writer of the gospels portray the Last Supper in their way. In the book of Matthew, we are told that Jesus told the disciples that He would be betrayed by one of them. Then Jesus blessed the bread and told them that the bread was His body. Then Jesus took the cup and said to drink it because it was His blood. There are four things we should take notice of when we look at the Last Supper scene.

1) This was the first day of the Passover celebration and much preparation was done for this feast. The disciples had to get unleavened bread, fruit and a lamb. The room where they would eat had to be cleansed. We, ourselves should get prepared for the communion before we partake of it.

2) Jesus said one of the disciples would betray Him. We must each examine our own commitment to Jesus Christ. We must see our own frailties and let them drive us closer to Christ. The disciples each wondered if it was them. Judas knew it was him. Jesus even gave Judas a chance to repent of the evil he would do. Jesus warned them of what would happen to the man that would betray him.

3) Jesus told them that the life He lived was being offered for them. The shedding of Jesus’s blood on the cross was so would not have to take the punishment of death for our sins. We should all take the Life that Jesus offers to us.

4) Jesus Christ’s returning means we will have continued fellowship with Him. Jesus told his disciples that He would not drink of the fruit of the vine until He drunk it new with them again.

We are to come to the communion table because we need Jesus and we believe Jesus. We are to come to the communion table because we know we are frail and need Jesus Christ. He who comes to Jesus will never be hungry or thirsty. We will have peace, love and faith thru Jesus Christ. We are to yield ourselves to God and to His Son Jesus Christ because we were bought with a price.

AMEN
