Sabbath 6/24/17 Seventh Day Baptist Edgewater, FL Pastor Keith sermon “The Tongue” Proverbs 15:1-8

The tongue is an important part of our body and our culture. We say “tongue twisters” and we say we are “tongue tied”. Tongue twisters have been used by many famous people in the past. The tongue in our mouth is a muscle just like the heart in our chest. The difference is that we cannot control our heart muscle but we CAN control our tongue muscle.

In the book of James, the tongue is listed as a fire that can be a world of evil. It can corrupt our whole person. James says no man can tame the tongue. He paints the picture of our tongue as a dirty part of our body. The dentist always says to brush your tongue. The Bible says what comes out of our mouth is what’s inside our heart. In the book of Ephesians, we are to not allow corruptible stuff, slander and malice come out of our mouths. Only helpful stuff like kindness and compassion should come out of our mouths.

In our text in Proverbs, the tongue can be used for good. A gentle answer, a tongue of knowledge and a prayer spoken out of our mouth pleases God. We are to use our tongue in good ways.

a) The Lord gives Wisdom and this wisdom we should speak.

God gives His wisdom generously. God’s wisdom is the best wisdom! God’s knowledge is the best knowledge! All of this can be found in the Word of God. God says His Word can change the world around us. God’s Will can and will establish God’s desires.

b) A Godly tongue can bring Healing to people around us.

The tongue that brings healing, building up and encouragement is pleasing to God. A peacemaker uses his tongue to turn away wrath. In an argument, a gentle answer turns away wrath. Peacemakers don’t focus on being right. Instead they say they understand why you are angry and understand why you are upset. Peacemakers want to calm down the situation and bring peace.

God has given us a powerful tool…..our Tongue. It can whittle down someone to nothing and it can build up someone to greatness. We should use our tongue to please God. We should use our tongue to build others up. We should use our tongue to spread God’s Word.

AMEN
