The Absence of Thanksgiving

We all know pride is bad and there is no shortage of reminders of that fact. But what is pride, or rather, what is pride not. The presence of pride shows up when a person leads a life void of thankfulness to God.

King Uzziah is a prime example of this (as recorded in II Chron. 26). He started out pretty good. He took the throne at 16 years old and "as long as he sought the Lord, God made him successful." (26:4, NASB). He had many successful military campaigns and became quite famous in his 52 years.

There was only one big little problem; he neglected to thank God for his successes and became proud of himself. He went into the Sanctuary and burned incense to God and because of this he was chastised by the priests. Before he could even put down the censor he had leprosy show up on his forehead. He died with leprosy in a separate house.

There is an old Southern saying that mama's sometimes use, which says, "don't get above yer raisin'". In this case, don't get above God in your heart. You have something to be thankful for and we must acknowledge His gifts and success in our lives.
