I notice that every time I post, the thread gets a symbol on the menu page, "thread watched". What is the significance of that?

It's just a "preference" setting... So that whenever you start a thread, or have posted a reply into a thread, it is automatically "watched" for you and will "alert" you whenever anyone responds.

If you click on the little bell shaped icon, and look at the bottom right, you will see a link that reads "preferences".... click that to adjust your settings.
