Was Bonhoeffer Correct?

I am sure most of you have heard of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. For those who have not, Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian. He was fiercely anti-Nazi and one of the few voices who spoke out against Hitler. Of course it cost him his life. He was hanged on 9 April 1945.

Bonhoeffer had a theory. It is called Bonhoeffer’s theory of stupidity. According to Bonhoeffer stupidity is a far greater threat than human evil. Evil can be protested, exposed, and even, to some degree, prevented by force. Not so stupidity, he states:

“Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed — in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical — and when facts are irrefutable, they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self-satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack.” (See Letters and Papers from Prison)

I believe Dietrich Bonhoeffer has a valid point. What do you think?

Stupidity cannot be cured. Stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death. There is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity.
Robert A. Heinlein

Me guess Dietrich was right in some ways that about stupidity he went from publicly denouncing the Fuhrer and the Nationalist Socialist party when they came to power than scooting off to England for a few years and than back to Germany where upon it was later discovered that he was working for the resistance with later connections with those connected to the 1943 bomb plot against Adolf Hitler. I guess that would put him in the category of being a traitor to your country or maybe just merely a useful stupid person used for such purposes as he so aptly wrote about. That being stupidity.

Hello Origen;

I used to have his book but never read it. Then I donated the book last year with most of my textbooks.

I don't know if Bonhoeffer had a valid point. I commend him for speaking out against Hitler but whether that was wise I don't know.

I will say the Lord doesn't like folly or foolishness. When I read this in Scripture, Proverbs 26:4-5 and 1 Corinthians 1:18.
God doesn't have time for either.

God bless you, Origen.

Is Bonhoeffer referring to Hitler or the Nazi Party in general?

Bob Durgin, a local radio guy who passed away many years ago, often said, "I wish stupidity was painful.", usually when government officials did something dumb or took a silly position on a matter. I concurred.

Stupidity usually is painful…

Proverbs 13:20 ESV
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
