Who would be some of your go to authors for teaching and doctrines?

Speaking for myself, I don't dwell so much on critiquing the author, unless it's an erroneous author and I'll admit there are many who slide by the publishers.
I'll take a study from Calvin, Gill, MacArthur and many other Christian authors, etc...there are many good points that will speak to me and that's coming directly from God. It's like listening to a sermon. It's not their opinion but the Word of God, if the preacher or author is applying this discipline.
Right now I'm studying Discipleship Essentials by Greg Ogden and How Does God Change Us? by Dane C. Ortlund. I don't agree with some of their teaching but I feel to avoid an author from a paragraph in their book that I may not agree just doesn't work for me. Instead, I look at the bigger picture or the argument that the author is conveying by taking his direction from God.

I like to blend theology and practical application, as Sproul and MacArthur were heavy theology, but Warren Weirsbe and Chuck Swindoll application
Every author not in the bible has mixture of truth and error, just some much more truth and other much more error
Paul of Tarsus, John Calvin, George Herbert, John Bunyan, Jonathan Edwards, B.B Warfield, Lewis Chafer, C.I. Scofield, C. S. Lewis, Charles Ryrie, and Wayne Grudem.

Are you referring to Paul of Tarsus the Pharisee, or Paul the Apostle? If you mean the latter, he was an author of the Bible.

I'm indeed speaking of the Apostle Paul. His scriptural writings are the first place I go for learning/studying doctrines and theological truths. I regard him as a primary teacher on these subjects.
I'll stick with Martyn Lloyd Jones (a Calvinistic Methodist), with James Montgomery Boice, a close second
I have a huge variety of books that I study at different times depending on the season of my walk that I am in . Right now I am studying Through the bible with J Vernon McGee . He stay fairly grounded and is very interesting to study . Although I dont think Ive found an author outside of the Bible that I totally agree with everything they write . But I think your going to have that with anyone that you read or converse with . If you dont mind me asking what version of the bible is your main go to ? Before I became a Pastor I spent 5 yrs studying the ESV and I have found the wording close to the greek in the NT , I now use a NKJV wide margin , and often refer to the NLT as a commentary reading .

Thank you for sharing. You were asking what version of the Bible is our main go to? The ESV is my main go to. I also keep several translations of the Bible and Biblical text books at my desk.
My wife and I also listen to J Vernon McGee on Christian Talk Radio in the car. I started listening to Dr. McGee going all the way back to 1978 when I was 21.
Back then I wasn't familiar with the order of the 66 books so I got lost flipping pages. Later I learned there is a "table of contents" in the opening of the Bible. lol!

Bob that is quite interesting since J Vernon McGee touted the KJV rather than the ESV.
as...(Of course there was no ESV when he was alive).But...
His Rejection of Modern Critical Texts: He was highly skeptical of the modern textual criticism that emerged in the late 19th and 20th centuries. He frequently warned his listeners against modern translations based on the Critical Text (such as the RSV or ASV), viewing them as products of the theological liberalism he spent his life fighting

Yes, I remember he did but I did most of my listening when I was driving (to and from work, distant driving in California.) What I find interesting is Dr. McGee didn't know I was using the ESV. lol!

My take on that is the late Dr. McGee stood firm on older traditional texts such as the KJV going all the way back to the early 30s. Perhaps that's why I enjoyed listening to his teachings. He had his reasons why he warned his listeners against "modern translations such as the RSV or ASV." I have the highest respect for Dr. McGee's view/opinion. He was very direct in his broadcasts and even to call-in listeners. lol!
But I personally continue to use the RSV to this day as a cross reference in my study and sermon preparation.

Do not see him as supporting KJVO though, as he quoted from the new Scofield and many times from hs own translation of a verse
Boice inetresting, one of the few who supported pretrib premil eschatology, but then he moved to more of premil position
Walter Martin used to say he was Pan=Mil meaning it would all pan out in the end. (Actually he was a historic PreMil pushing Alan Ladd's position).
Never hinted he was KJVO.
Was his own version called the OBFYV? (Out Back Farm Yard Version)
