Good questions. I would say that it is because of men living in different "ages" and different locations and ethnicity.
Then also, God’s existence is so rich that it simply exceeds the capacity of man to know Him. There is no way for man, using the language of mankind, to encapsulate God fully. Mankind has but a limited vocabulary with which to encapsulate all that they know of God’s disposition: great, honored, wondrous, unfathomable, supreme, holy, righteous, wise, and so on. Too many words!

I think a lot of those names God has are endearments. How people describe Him anyway? Though the name of Jesus is very dear to me, its pronounced differently according to what language you speak, but means "Salvation"
There are not many people named Jesus that I encounter but...in the 1st century apparently it was quite a common name. Todays equivalent would be 'Joshua' but I guess people don't really want to name their child Jesus for some strange reason, it's easier to name a child 'Christian'. Or Muhammed. (if you are muslim...it's very common).

I always thought they describe the nature, attributes and singularity of the One God and are there for our edification and learning.

And every single one of those names are correct.
When we understand how each of God's names reveals another aspect of His character, we can quickly see what a gift it is that He has so many names recorded in the Bible. Because the more we learn about those names, the more we learn about God.
There is another thought as well. Consider YOU and ME. We have several names. A first name, a middle name and a last name. Then we usally have a nickname and sometimes several depending on who the person is that is known by us.
For example, some call me "Bama" and some who are real close to me call me "Pretty Boy", but my wife of 52 years calls me "Stud Muffin".

Why does a person have many nicknames? It shows he is God because everyone has a "nickname" for him.
After all HE is the original Father.Phillipians 2:10-11.......
