Tithing is it really New Testament?

Why do churches pay tithes when they are under the Priesthood of Jesus Christ and not under the Levite Priesthood?
God clearly says that the Tithe is the Levite Inheritance.
Numbers 18:20-22

Tithing is mentioned nowhere from the Book of Acts and on (the birth of the Church). 10% is a good place to start giving though.:)

Tithing as a legal requirement is not part of the New Covenant. Jesus' words to the Pharisees were addressed to people who were, at that point of time, still under the Old Covenant because Jesus had not yet died to institute the New Covenant.

By comparison, circumcission also pre-dated the formal giving of the Old Covenant under Moses, but Paul's writings make it clear that this was part of the Law, and not binding upon Christians.

In fact all of the Law of the Old Covenant has been superceded in the New Covenant by the living presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. We do not abstain from murder, adultery, theft or any thing else because an external law says we should, but because those things are contrary to the life of the Spirit within us.

Likewise, we are not required to tithe as under the Law. However, God owns and has the right to everything we have, do and are, and 10% returned to Him is a good place to start acknowledging that.

In other words, if we tithe because we are trying to fulfill a law, and it is not coming from our heart, then we are sinning anyway. Is that what you are saying? But, if our hearts are righteous in God's eyes, we will want to tithe . . . we will willingly tithe . . . and maybe even more then 10%

I have never tithed because I don't have control of our finances, and my dh would never do it. But I also would not want to start and then begin to see it as a burden. Every time I have an opportunity to help someone financially, I do that. But, what if you don't have a church you go to? I'm trying to find a house church, but there are none in my area. If I should ever tithe, does it matter where you give the money you think? Biblically? Could I just give to the poor or to a missionary?

Hi Lynn, I do appreciate your clarification. I tythe from my social security check; but my husband doesn't. However, he gives his talents and energies in charitable works. (as do I) He does donate financially; but not 10% of his pension and social security check.

About this and a few other things we are not on the same page; but we are both Christians who love and serve the Lord.

Sweets, in the Old Testament the tithe went to the temple and was used for (1) The support of the priests (2) To provide for the poor and (3) sometimes, just to have a celebration.

Carrying that forward to the New Testament as a general principle (not law), the tithe basically should go to the place where you normally get your spiritual food. If you have a local church, it should go there to help support the pastor and run the programs of the church. If you are between churches, it should go to whatever ministry is currently supplying your spiritual food. Donating to missions and/or charity should be extra giving beyond that. However, since it is God's money, the best idea is to ask Him where He wants to use it. :):)

Deborah, I've been in that situation and know how totally frustrating it was. You are only responsible for the money over which you have some control. Give God what you are able, and leave the rest in His hands.

Mar 10:17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
Mar 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
Mar 10:19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor thy father and mother.
Mar 10:20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
Mar 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
Mar 10:22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
Mar 10:23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
Mar 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
Mar 10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

If your still talkng dollors and sence or cents, commitment and giving by percentages through the establishment you have missed the whole point. . If your not prepared to trust Him with your last penny, with every single thing you have, even your live then my brothers and sisters, you don't trust Him enough .
If your not ready to turn over your entire life to Christ Jesus ,forake all that you are and own and pick up the cross (His cross) and follow him then it doesn't matter one single bit why, or how, or to whom, for what or how much of what you give.

It's not about the money, never was, never will be. . .

Lynn, My tythe does go to our church. Thanks for this encouragement. It helps. Wish we had a smilie for a "hug" here. Anyway..sending one your way. Deb. :)

i also know my wife would divorce me if i sold up,and give my half to the church.i also know Christ wouldn,t want that either.not that i could i owe .if you put pressure on people, people resent giving.so 10% is rubbish, give what you like.any gift is better than no gift,if you do so with a good heart.

Don't give out your tithe out of obligation or tradition. Give out because you love God and you are thankful for His blessings.

I am still not a good giver but I am now slowly learning to.

I don't think that tithing is nessessarily part of the law. The verse WordSeeker quoted supports this. In addition, Proverbs 3:9 says that if we give God the "firstfruits of all our increase" we honor Him, and He will bless us. Also, supporting the Church is just a right thing to do.

The New Covenant way:

2Co 9:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

Question .. Why do churches pay tithes when they are under the Priesthood of Jesus Christ and not under the Levite Priesthood?
God clearly says that the Tithe is the Levite Inheritance. end of question

Hope this helps ...

Gen 14:18 Then King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was a priest of God Most High.
Gen 14:19 He blessed Abram, and said, "Blessed is Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth.
Gen 14:20 Blessed is God Most High, who has handed your enemies over to you." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

This is Abraham giving tithes to the king of Salem. Melchizedek.

Jesus Christ is called the "high priest" after the order of Melchizedek. I cannot imagine Abraham giving tithes to Melchizedek but refusing the churches today when Jesus Christ is the high priest of the church today. Tithing is a privilege.

as always,your motives,are very important.as for 10% etc,there is no rule.give what you want.
Don't give out your tithe out of obligation or tradition. Give out because you love God and you are thankful for His blessings.

I am still not a good giver but I am now slowly learning to.

:amen: to all of the above!

Wow! Great thread! I've had my own druthers with this subject in the past, but I must say that my heart is finally at peace with God in that I give according to what I feel the Spirit is leading me to give. Some days I tithe 10%. Some days I tithe more. Some days I tithe less. It is all in what I believe God is leading me to tithe at the moment. And, when I do tithe I do it with a cheerful heart, because like Smellycat said, "your motives are important."
