Lukewarm Christians

Lukewarm Christians

Revelation says that God despises lukewarm Christians, and that they will not make it into the Kingdom. However, how does one know that (s)he is a lukewarm Christian, and what can we do to ensure that we are not?

A quick search only showed me one appearence in Revelation of the word "lukewarm" (KJV) So I'll assume this is the verse you're speaking of:

Rev 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
Rev 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth.

In verse 15 we see the church being addressed as neither cold or hot, this is most likely to refer to their state or religion fever. A person cold to religion would be an unbeliever, having no faith whatsoever. While someone hot in religion would have not only faith but a continous striving for God.
Lukewarm, being in the middle, would appear to be someone who will accept the Lord in voice, or even have faith of a sort, but their lives are not for the lord. They do not strive to know God or activley try to live a life without sin.
It would be hard to recognise it, near impossible to see in others. It can be hard tryin to examine it in yourself, since we usually have a positive bias towards ourselves.
I think the only thing we can do to ensure we are not lukewarm is to have faith, and not just profess that faith, but show it in our lives. Living as we are directed by God.
Activley strive to live without sin.
Strrive to know the Lord personally and deeply.
Don't be a "church/holiday" christian, someone who only lives for God on certain days or occaisions.
And pray. Pray to be full of fire for the Lord.
Hope that helps.

Lukewarm?

How do you tell if a baby bottle is cold, warm or hot? You test it out on your arm. (Perhaps that is showing my age...)
Test out your faith. Are you passionate about your relationship with Jesus Christ? If so, you are not lukewarm.
Are you a Sunday morning church-goer, and a citizen of the world the other 23 and 23/24 days of the week? If so you are, at best, lukewarm.

If you have any doubt about your relationship with the Lord - get to work on it!

Blessings.

Christians of the church of the Laodiceans

Where is Christians mentioned in that verse?

In Revelation 3:13 we see an address to the churches. In Revelation 3:14 we see an address to the church of the Laodiceans in which being lukewarm is referred to. When addressing this church, I believe it is clear (to me anyway) that the Christians of that church (church of the Laodiceans) are being addressed in Revelation 3:15-16. This is a good lesson still, we should learn from the shortcomings of others (in this case the church of the Laodiceans) & God williing they did become "hot" before it was too late (Revelation 3:19 - 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent).

Revelation 3:13-16 (NKJV)
13 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”’ 14 “And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

It is not fair to apply this passage to a salvation message. God can figuratively spew you out of his mouth but that does not mean in itself that you then head toward eternal punishment.

It is important to first realize what salvation is based on. Salvation, or the forgiveness of sins, is certain and absolute and utterly without question. What did the apostle John write: "These things I have written in order that you might KNOW that you HAVE BEEN saved."

In order for you to even have an awareness of your sin the Holy Spirit must first quicken you to it. Therefore, anyone asking God for forgiveness WILL BE FORGIVEN utterly, completely, and to the utter most degree past, present, and future. Salvation is not up for debate. You confessed your sin to God trusting Christ as Lord, received forgiveness, was therfore reconciled to God and positioned in the Kingdom of God. Still, in the weakness of the flesh, you continued to sin maybe being merely luke warm in your walk with the Lord. What does the apostle John say about that: "We have an advocate before the Father who continually prays for us."

Now, please don't think that I am promoting a don't-care attitute in the matter. The Holy Spirit may be convicting you of being luke warm and you may then need to respond. Willfully continuing in a luke warm state may lead to worse things that will cause you harm. If you were openly saying you don't care it would be another matter but you need not worry about... "not being good enough." :)

I'm not going to repost scriptures on this specific post that I have posted else where on the subject, but I just want to warn that the "once saved always saved" idea can be very dangerous (from my understanding). I don't want to beat a "dead horse" here but if someone wants to know why I think this, ask me & I'll be happy to repeat it (using scripture) on this post or another one if it is ok according to the forum site rules & with the moderators.

I just wanted to mention (as I try to in most my posts where I disagree) that I respect the right to "WCardone's" belief on this matter. We are not always going to agree as none of us are perfect (much less 2 or more of us). I neglected to state (in my previous post) I respect “WCardone's" choice to believe as he wishes and want state I was not trying to come off as arrogant with my response. If I did so, I apologize.

I am genuinely concerned for the wellbeing of my brothers & sisters in Christ, and this is why I made my response. The reason I did not go into more detail, is because I have so elsewhere on this site & I don’t want “force feed” my reasoning onto others. I have had people try to do that to me in the past and it is not a method I would suggest.

The Church

The Church and the world walked far apart
On the changing shores of time:
The world was singing a giddy song,
And the Church a hymn sublime.

"Come, give me your hand", cried the merry world,
"And walk with me this way."
But the good Church hid her snowy hand,
And solemnly answered "Nay!"

"Nay, walk with me but a little space",
Said the world with a kindly air,
"The road I walk is a pleasant road,
And the sun shines always there.

"My path, you see, is a broad, fair path,
And my gate is high and wide;
"There is room enough for you and for me
To travel side by side",

Half-shyly the Church approached the world
And gave him her hand of snow;
The old world grasped it and walked along,
Saying in accents low:

"Your dress is too simple to suit my taste;
I will give you pearls to wear;
"Rich velvet and silk for your graceful form
And diamonds to deck your hair."

The church looked down on her plain, white robes
And then at the dazzling world,
And blushed as she saw his handsome lip
With a smile contemptuous curled.

"I will change my dress for a costlier one",
Said the Church with a smile of grace;
Then her pure white garments drifted away,
And the world gave her in place

Beautiful satins and shining silks,
And roses, and gems and pearls;
And over her forehead her bright hair fell,
Crisped in a thousand curls.

"Your house is too plain", said the proud old world,
"I’ll build you one like mine;
Carpets of Brussels and curtains of lace,
And furniture ever so fine.

And he bought her a costly and beautiful home;
Splendid it was to behold;
Her sons and her beautiful daughters dwelt there,
Gleaming in purple and gold.

And fairs and shows in the halls were held,
And the world and his children were there;
And laughter and music and feasts were heard
In the place that was meant for prayer.

The Angel of Mercy flew over the Church,
And whispered, "I know thy sin."
The Church looked back with a sigh
And longed to gather her children in.

"Your preachers are all too old and plain",
Said the gay old world with a sneer.
"They frighten my children with dreadful tales
Which I like not for them to hear.

"They talk of brimstone and fire and pain,
And the horrors of endless night;
"They talk of a place that should never at all
Be mentioned in ears polite.

"I shall send you some of the better stamp,
Brilliant and gay and fast,
"Who will tell them that people may live as they list
And go to heaven at last."

"The sons of the world and the sons of the church
Walked closely, Hand and heart,
And only the Master Who knoweth all
Could tell the two apart.

Then the church sat down at her ease and said,
"I am rich and in goods increased;
"I have need of nothing, have nought to do
But to laugh and dance and feast."

The sly world heard her and laughed in his sleeve,
And mockingly said aside,
"The church is fallen, the beautiful church,
And her shame is her boast and pride."

...but I just want to warn that the "once saved always saved" idea can be very dangerous (from my understanding).
Hi Jaerod,

Thank you for noticing what was not obvious to me. I was not addressing eternal security or a "once saved always saved" theology. I probably should have pointed that out as it would be easy to extrapolate on my theology.

The point I was pursuing was that we can know beyond question that we... HAVE BEEN saved and that we ARE saved. No doubt need remain. The matter is settled. This is a contractural arrangement. God has simply stated that He will forgive our sins without limitation.

I will now move on to clarify any confusion on eternal security. I don't think that anyone would try to submit that once you ask for and receive forgiveness you can then sin all you want without consequence. The question that bears merit is "Can you boldly and purposely change your mind and walk away from God" losing your salvation. That is a completely different question that I am NOT addressing as it is not related.

The question at hand concerns a person who has expressed a desire to follow Christ as Lord, has at some time earlier petitioned the Lord for the forgivness of sins, has demonstrated repentance from sin, and perhaps you could even add joyfully looks forward to the Lord's return. That person has been saved and... IS SAVED. No question remains, the matter has been settled, it is not open for debate in view of God's word on the matter as revealed in the Bible. That person can now move on to grow in Christ. As he or she studies God's word it will eventually become painfully (I probably should have written instead "joyfully") obvious to themselves that they have been saved.

I was not addressing eternal security or a "once saved always saved" theology.

My apologies WCardone. Sorry for any conjecture &/or misunderstanding I derived from your post. I did not mean to "put words into your mouth". Thank you for the polite manner with which you have responded to me.
