It's not really a scriptural expression, it's just a way of describing how the spirit of Christ comes into us when we turn to God. Christ coming into us and living inside us is scriptural, but asking Jesus to come into our heart as a method of conversion I think was started around the beginning of last century, actually we don't need to ask Him in, He promised to come in when we decide to serve God, and we can trust Him.

I understand where you are coming from , Michael . and it is difficult to explain but it seems that was a term used for years and might be a little confusing to some just as " Born Again" which is Biblical by the way because Jesus says we must be born again .... not naturally but spiritually .

1 Peter 1:23
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

Because accepting Jesus into our live is personal and relational " Asking Jesus into our heart ' has been a way to invite non- Christians to experience salvation . The heart is where everything is formed and Jesus talks a lot about the our heart ... Psalms talks a lot about the heart.

Psalm 51:10
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Proverbs 4:23
Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life


2 Corinthians 4:6

It says right in John that we must be born again to see the kingdom of heaven.
 
The Bible sometimes uses the word heart or spirit - it says we believe in our ''heart" - that is our ''spirit'' (as opposed to our head - intellent). God is a spirit and lives in our spirit.
 
I think that whether we say "heart" or "spirit" is not really the issue here. The important thing is that the unbeliever chooses the "life" that The Lord Jesus offers us.

This was placed before Joshua in Deut 30:19

and this is placed before each one of us now. I think that getting bogged down with "wording" is simply a waste of time, and will accomplish very little if anything.
 
i think wording has been played on from the start.

at the beginning,God said they have corrupted my way.
when jesus came ,they tried to trap him in his words.
i think we will find satan wriggling around up there,chosing his words carefully like a lawyer ,etc.

Yes, Satan chooses his words. Satan does love theatrics.

For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness
1 Thes 2:5

The apostles are not hypocrites. They do not use flattering words. But Satan will do the opposite.
