What is faith?

What is faith?

"Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Heb 11:1). Faith in God therefore is an absolute conviction in our heart that God expressed His love for us by sacrificing His life, in order to bring forgiveness for our sins (John 3:16 & Matthew 26:28), and that we must love one another the way He loved us (John 15:12). Faith is extremely dynamic; and the force within it is so powerful that even the tiniest amount of faith is mighty enough to move mountains (Matthew 17:20). The seed of faith is sown into our heart by God (Ezekiel 11:19). We have a choice (1Peter2:16) to accept this faith and allow it to grow to perfection by putting it into action (James 2:22) or to let it die by our inactivity (James 2:17). Our actions strengthen our faith because in doing them we are accepting God’s grace by being obedient to His will. Since love is the only true expression of faith (Galatians 5:6) our acts of faith must be acts of love. Furthermore, since love is expressed in sacrifice (John 3:16), faith too is expressed in sacrifice (Genesis 22:2).

Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Heb 11:1).

That is the general definition of faith. That is the faith that Christians basically have. But that can not be applied to the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ. For Christ has seen it all.

But Christians can also acquire that faith that Jesus has:

Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus
Rev 14:12

So we have our faith. But in the end, we should also have the faith of Jesus. :)

faith is trust .

speaking of faith like it is the force in star wars is the reason why we cannot move mountains anymore .

Michael's comment got me thinking.

Faith is one of the things which one might consider the most difficult to keep. It is easy to acquire faith but it is just as easy to allow it to slip and slide.

Especially when things seem impossible, but God can make the impossible, possible. That is one of the many facets of faith - knowing that God can turn the whole situation around.

If we can have faith that our car will make to the gas station, can we not have faith that God will guide our lives?

Habakkuk 2:4
4 "See, he is puffed up;
his desires are not upright—
but the righteous will live by his faith

Matthew 9:22

22 Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment.
Matthew 6:30

30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Matthew 8:10
10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

Matthew 21:21
21Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done.

Luke 17:6
6He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)

I think it is important to note that because Hebrews 11 chapter speaks of people's relationships with God going forth doing impossible things . it is important to note that the faith being spoken of here is most likely trust like we have in human and pet relationships .

Faith is choosing to believe in something out of hope, rather than scientific certainty. Throughout the Bible, God values and rewards "childlike" faith.

Faith from a Christian perspective is differing form the world's idea of faith . Yah people can say they have faith in maybe even sitting on a chair and it not breaking ... that's faith but real born again faith elevates to another level and our faith depends on God and the Holy Spirit living in us and that we as little children have accepted that Jesus Christ is our Saviour and desire to follow Him .

We have faith that Jesus is our every day comfort , guide , helper , peace and so on . My faith is a total dependence on Jesus Christ and Him alone.

Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Amen John ... If we have Jesus in our heart , then faith should come more natural and like Michael says " We learn to trust in Him " . Trust is essential to have faith .
