Hearing From The Holy Spirit

I have a personal relationship/communion with the Holy Spirit of God.The Holy Spirit speaks to me.Let me share with you guys some of my testimonies to encourage some Christians here:
1.My first encounter with the person of the Holy spirit was when i read: Good Morning Holy Spirit by Benny Hinn.It was way back 2001.I wrote Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) that year seeking admission into university.I was to choose 2 universities out of the several universities available.I chose my first choice and getting to my second choice the HOLY SPIRIT SPECIFICALLY told me to choose University of Ibadan(West African-Nigeria).Subsequently,it happens that my first choice university did not give me admission. So i didn't bother to go to the second university, thinking i won't be given admission. But to my Amazement I was given admission on MERIT List.My name came out in the National Newspaper(PUNCH).Today am an alumnus of that great University of Ibadan. The Holy Spirit is too much.
2.I was looking for a 'receipt' in a brown envelop where i kept my documents.i ransacked all my documents meticulously but couldn't see the receipt.I decided to go and look for the receipt in a storeroom where we kept books. While going to the storeroom,i told the Holy Spirit to help me locate/find the receipt. On getting to the storeroom.I was about to start search, the HOLY SPIRIT told me clearly that the receipt i was looking for was not in the storeroom, that i should go back and search the brown envelope.(I did not argue with Him) Even taking into cognizance that i had searched the envelope meticulously earlier.I simply obey and went back to search the envelop. When i just opened the envelop,lo and behold I saw the receipt in the envelope. Then the Holy Spirit spoke very clearly to me again.'That in this life, whenever i involve HIM in whatever i do.I will find life more easier'.
3.The Holy Spirit has directed me to a man i met once in the university,to a market where his wife sells clothes.I wanted to meet the man,but the man was not in the school.I was told that the man 'Might' be in his wife's shop. The problem/challenge is that: I don't even know the market.I was given just the name of the Market.I told the Holy Spirit to direct me to the man, that i needed to see him.Check out how the HOLY SPIRIT was navigating me through the market with 'SPIRITUAL GPS'.When the Holy Spirit told me to stop.I look by my right hand.I saw the man sitting down in his wife's shop discussing with some friends. The man was amazed/surprised how i was able to locate him.IN FACT,even myself i am flabbergasted as to how i located the Man.The HOLY SPIRIT IS TOO MUCH.
4.When i was in the university, there was a day i misplaced my diary.I searched meticulously for it,but could not find it.I started to become agitated.I then recollect that i have the HOLY SPIRIT as a closer friend to assist me.All i did is to ask HIM to assist me find it.He just gave me specific direction. That i should come outside the balcony of the room.i should look on top of the cupboard.Lo and behold the diary was there. That was specific direction by the HOLY SPIRIT.
5.During my NYSC(National Youth Service Corps) in Nigeria-west Africa(one year mandatory service, after graduation from the university).I met two wonderful and gorgeous Christian Sisters who were in love with me.I too have a feelings for them. One of the sisters told me that we should pray and ask God for His Will concerning marriage. What i just did was to present the Two sisters before the Holy Spirit.I asked the HOLY SPIRIT which of them will be my wife-And HE said 'None'.i was amazed and perplexed.
I have several and so many testimonies about the HOLY Spirit speaking. The Holy Spirit does speak to us Christians.Just learn to hear Him and obey His instructions.
Of recent,my hearing from the HOLY SPIRIT have taken another dimension after listening/watching and reading MARK VIRKLER four(4) keys to hearing from God. 1.stillness 2.Vision 3.spontaneity and 4.Journaling
Before now, when the Holy Spirit speaks to me i don't journal. But presently,i bought a note book.I ask the Holy Spirit Questions and He gives me answers.Of Recent the Holy Spirit told me; 'Abraham, ask me any question i will provide/give you answer'.The Holy Spirit is my Best friend and companion.I LOVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WITH ALL MY HEART.

The Spirit speaks to me in different ways. Many times His voice is what could seem to be a passing thought, which in hind sight, proves to be a gentle nudge. Maybe its a reminder to grab something which later turns out to be needed. I used to ignore these thoughts, but now that I am wiser (if not older) I realize my life is made much simpler and easier if I listen.

If we have given ourselves to God, He will use the Spirit to guide us. We have free will and can (and often do) go our own way. But, if we let go and let God have His way, our lives will follow the path He has set for us.

I have never heard the voice of God, the Holy Spirit or Jesus audibly. I however feel as you do in that I have had it happen many times when a gentle nudge is given.........a thought is remembered...........a need to do something unexplainable has happeded.

I too have given these things a lot more validity than I used to.

The Lord Jesus is Our Lord and Saviour. Remember we are in the dispensation of the Holy Spirit... John 16:7 John 14:26

Dear Barr.............we live in the Dispensation of Grace today. Yes the Holy Spirit is active and indwelling but the presise time would be the Church Age or the Day of Grace when useing theaching of Dispensationalism.

The idea of calling this age the Dispensation Of the Holy Spirit is a "Denominational" teaching not a Biblical one my dear brother.

That is easily understood as the Bible tells us that the Holt Spirit does NOT call attention to Himself but instead points to the Lord Jesus Christ.

John 16:13.................
"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he ... shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak ."

I am not disputing the fact that we live in the dispensation of Grace. After all,we are saved by Grace through Faith, not by works lest any man should boast. Eph 2:8-9
In as much as the Holy Spirit does not call attention to Himself, The Holy Spirit is God Himself, the third Person of the divine Trinity.
Let us search the scripture and see some of these questions:
Can the Holy Spirit Think for Itself and Make its Own Decisions?
--The Holy Spirit has a mind (see Romans 8:27).
--The Holy Spirit helped to settle questions during the Church Council at Jerusalem (see Acts 15:28).
--The Holy Spirit dispenses gifts to different individuals according as He wills (see 1 Corinthians 12:8-11).
--The Holy Spirit forbade some from going to preach in certain places (see Acts 16:6-7).

So we can see that the Holy Spirit has a mind, can think for Itself and can make Its own decisions. But can the Holy Spirit act for Itself?
Can the Holy Spirit Act for Itself?

--The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus and sent Him out to preach the gospel (see Luke 4:18-19); In fact, both
the Father and the Holy Spirit sent Jesus (see Isaiah 48:16).
--The Holy Spirit testifies or witnesses of Jesus (see John 15:26).
--The Holy Spirit leads God’s people (see Romans 8:14).
--The Holy Spirit teaches and causes us to remember the truth (John 14:26).
--The Holy Spirit comforts us as does Christ (John 14:16).
--The Holy Spirit strives with us (see Genesis 6:3).
--The Holy Spirit reproves us of sin, righteousness, and judgment (see John 16:8-11).
--The Holy Spirit instructs us (see Nehemiah 9:20).

So we can see that the Holy Spirit can act for Itself, and can bear Its own witness. But can the Holy Spirit speak for Itself?
Can the Holy Spirit Speak for Itself?

--The Holy Spirit speaks, guides, hears and shows (John 16:13-15).
--The Holy Spirit speaks, chooses, calls and sends forth (see Acts 13:1-4).
--The Holy Spirit gives messages to prophets and they declare: “Thus saith the Holy Ghost” (see Acts
21:11).

So we can see that the Holy Spirit can indeed speak for Itself. Besides this, He can hear, He can guide, show, choose, calls and sends forth others. Now what other characteristics does the Bible reveal about the Holy Spirit which shows it to be a Person and Being other than God–the Father and God–the Son?
--The Holy Spirit has knowledge, and searches all things (see 1 Corinthians 2:10-11).
--The Holy Spirit sanctifies us (see Romans 15:16).
--The Holy Spirit holds communion with us (see 2 Corinthians 13:14); and so does Christ (see 1
Corinthians 1:9).
--The Holy Spirit is the source of regeneration and renewal for salvation (see John 3:5-8; Titus 3:5).
--The Holy Spirit resurrects the faithful from the dead (see Romans 8:11; 1 Peter 3:18).
--The Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible and moved upon the prophets to speak (see 2 Peter 1:21).
--The Holy Spirit is another Comforter other than Christ (see John 14:16).
--The Holy Spirit helps our infirmities (see Romans 8:26).
--The Holy Spirit can be tempted and lied to (see Acts 5:3, 9).
–The Holy Spirit can be blasphemed and sinned against (see Mark 3:28-29; Luke 12:10; Matthew 12:31).
--The Holy Spirit is another Intercessor other than Christ (see Romans 8:26); The Spirit intercedes for us
through prayer, while Christ intercedes for us through His precious blood, merits and righteousness.

All of these things show conclusively that the Holy Spirit is indeed a Person and Being, and that He has His own work to perform in the plan of Redemption, other than the Father and the Son.

Barr......everything you posted is very well known my friend. You have not broken any new ground here. Every thing you posted is Biblically true.

But none of those Scriptures answer your post that we are in the Dispensation of the Holy Spirit which is what I called your attenntion to.

We are in the Dispensation of Grace today.

Theological bantering aside, the first time I remember the Holy Spirit speaking to me was when I was walking home from school and this huge black dog ,frothing at the mouth, started barking at me and charged across the street barking and growling ferociously. I turned toward him and froze. He continued circling and growling. I feinted a move toward him and he backed of a couple of steps then stood his ground. I turned to continue my walk home and he closed distance within just a few feet barking and growling all the more. This senario repeated itself a few more times with me stopping and him backing off less and less each time. And each time I turned to continue my walk he was closer and closer. I was a wisp of a boy and not the 250 pounder I am today. The huge dog easily outweighed me and to this day I feel the dog was sizing me up for a mauling. The last time I turned away from him he started nipping at my fingers and I felt if I turn one more time he will attack. In my mind I cried out to the Lord to do something. Then right there the dog ran off. I was furious with the Lord and asked why He let this stupid dog almost attack me. Couldn't He see how afraid I was? It was then He replied to me "Oh ye of little faith. I was right here only a prayer away".

I have been a christian for many years and have heard the Holy Spirit off and on those many years. I had surrendered my life to G_d and Jesus and it was bliss. The christian walk was far from boring. I depended on the still small voice for direction. It would bring understanding to the scriptures I read. The knowledge learned was immense. But recently something happened and I no longer hear the small voice of G_d. I get the quiet but no voice. Even while reading scriptures no longer the voice. I feel like I'm lost, with no direction or guidence. I feel lukewarm at best. Best way to describe it, or indifferent. Definitely no longer feel the love of G_d or His presence. This has greatly hampered my walk with G_d and Jesus. I still believe in G_d and Jesus, just that now everything is mondane. The fire has waned from a raging fire to a small glowing ember. I seek the embrace of the first love, but relationships are two- way. I seek G_d's and Jesus's face but I need to be sought out too. Like the lost lamb on the edge of the cliff I seek my rescuer to bring me back into the fold.

Do you remember when Jesus was dying on the cross for your sin? Just like the way you feel now God has left me? God does this to the ones he loves the most. You are blessed.

Matthew 27:46New International Vermysion (NIV)

46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[a]lemasabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b]

Mark 12:30-31New International Version (NIV)

30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a]31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] There is no commandment greater than these.”

read the holy bible daily, put on the mind of Christ.

It took me some time to realise that it wasn't my intellect or natural ears that would hear the Lord, but the inner ears of my own human spirit, and I didn't learn that from fellow christians either.
Once I understood this it radically changed my perspective and I started to quieten the noise that my soul/intellect was making, and started listening with the inner man of the spirit, and that still small voice of God began to become clearer within me.

I am saying this hopefully to help those others who struggle to make sense of it all!

We were created to have communion with God. Unfortunately, Adam decided that his intellectual knowledge was more important than his spiritual communion with God, thus inverting what God intended. Apart from the death that such rebellion brought to Adam's own spirit, ever since that time, man's ego or human nature has largely suppressed his spirit and exalted his knowledge instead. This means that the very idea of hearing the whisper of the Holy Spirit is an alien concept for most men and women. Even worse, amongst christians, intellectual knowledge of the content of the bible is exalted above a close hearing communion with the Holy Spirit.

Now, I live for that communion of the Holy Spirit, and like others have experienced, listening to the spirit has saved my life when driving.
Looking back, I first heard the whisper of the Holy Spirit over 50 years ago. being a youngster in a non christian family, I didn't realise the significance of that at the time. A few years later I again encountered a real unfolding revelation of spiritual truth straight from the Holy Spirit. Again I didn't realise the true significance of it. Both times it seemed so normal, nevertheless I didn't tell anyone.
It was about 10 years later in my mid 20s that I first heard the gospel, and realised that they were talking about the God I already knew from childhood.
Being collared by enthusiastic evangelists via the "sinners prayer" took me into the church for several years and I unfortunately never properly explored what I had experienced as a child, despite it beinga spirit filled christian fellowship. Rather than making it easy, they made it more complicated. It wasn't till I left the church scene completely that I really started to recapture where I was with the Lord at the beginning of my spiritual life.

My wife and I have frequently found it easier to speak about hearing the whisper of the spirit to people who are unchurched than those who are in the church!

How did you learn to quiet the noise of your soul/intellect?

I just want to know how many of you have heard the voice of the Holy Spirit and what can we do as Christians to encourage other Christians to recognize the soft voice of the Holy Spirit.

The only way to "reliably" hear the voice of the Spirit of God is by having the "word of God" separate the flesh, from the soul, and spirit from each other.
Without this it always be a "hit and miss" thing, and we will always be trying to discern if what we are hearing is from God or our own mind. It is called "exercising" our spiritual "senses".

Heb_4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Heb 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use
have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

How did you learn to quiet the noise of your soul/intellect?
I guess its a bit like being the child that Jesus talked about in Matt18.
1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
2He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them.
3And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

When a child is born, his intellect and his spirit are both childlike and on a par. At the first opportunity, his parents set about feeding his intellectual development, whilst completely ignoring his spiritual development. This pattern ensures that the child's intellect becomes mature whilst his spirit is effectively crushed and atrophied. Thus in adulthood, the intellect naturally dominates the spirit, so when the Holy Spirit whispers something, the first port of call is to check it out with their intellect! No wonder men reject so much of what God tells them.
The following two scriptures make it clear that it is only through our spirit, not the natural senses, that we hear God, and that human nature and our spiritual nature are at war.
Gal5v17For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
1Cor2v14The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

Thus turning to the flesh to check or confirm what God is saying, is total foolishness! And that is exactly why Jesus told the disciples that they needed to be like a little child, because a little child had not yet developed his human intellectual nature.

So, back to your question Mykuhl. If we are to grow in the spirit, quietening the noise of our soul/intellect is all about dying to self. We have grown up knowing all the answers, living by our own wits, honing our intellectual skills etc. Its time to put all that to death, to surrender all to the dominion of Jesus Christ in us.
For each and every one of us that dying will be different, but we have an amazing counsellor who is rooting for us to get there. That counsellor has promised wisdom and the presence of the Holy Spirit to all who ask, therefore we are not doing this alone. God truly desires your fellowship, and desires your ears.

Could you tell me exactly what you mean by "having the word of God separate the flesh................"? How do you define the "word of God"?

Man is spirit, soul, and body. Naturally we can not determine these three separate parts, as we just sense our self's as just being "one" person.
The Word of God is the only thing that can "divide" the soul, from the spirit, and flesh. If this never comes about we will never be able to distinguish our natural mind from the mind of Christ. The more of the Word of God given me by "revelation" the more I can tell that understanding did not come from my natural mind, but the Spirit of God. I know my physical mind when it thinks thoughts, and I for sure know the mind of Christ in me when revelation is given.
Practicing exercising my spiritual senses has given me that understanding that I could have not received any other way.

You still haven't told me what "the word of God" is. I need that answer to comprehend the rest of what you are saying.

You know, the Bible. The written Word of God that contains all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, that is Spirit and it is life!
I thought so, which is why I asked it more than once to get a clear answer from you, and that is where you and I differ.
Despite its popular usage, the "word of God" is not the bible!
The Word of God is not a book, but Jesus Christ himself as the wonderful creator of all things.
Go check the Greek in the scripture you have quoted and you will see that it uses "Logos" in the original. John chapter1 makes it clear exactly who that Logos is, and it sure isn't a book!

John1v1In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word(Logos) was with God, and the Word (Logos) was God. 2He was in the beginning with God.3All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.…

In your belief system, John1 would read like this.
"In the beginning was the bible, and the bible was with God and the bible was God..........."

Also your own quote-
Heb4v12For the word of God (Logos) is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.13And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

The problem with your stance is that it makes the hearing of the Holy Spirit the specialist domain of the bible academics. You exclude people like me who heard the Holy Spirit at least 10 years before I ever heard the gospel or read a bible.

Brother, does not the Bible "contain" the Word (Logos) of God? What came first the "logos" of God or the "Rhema"? Both are translated "Word" in the Bible. The word "logos" is where we get our words "logic, purpose", and the word "rhema" is where we get the words "rhetoric, orator ". When we speak of Jesus Christ are we talking about the Word (logos) of God which all the Bible (scriptures contain)? Before Jesus's incarnation in becoming flesh, in what form did he come to fulfill as the "logos" (purpose) of God?

Heb 10:7.. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

Jesus being the "logos" of God, and what did the logos speak? Jesus being the logos of God spoke the "rhema" of God!! Jesus spoke what was written about himself who being the purpose and reason of God in his coming to earth.
Think about it, what do you "engage" first before you open your mouth and speak? You must, before anything else have a plan, purpose, or reason for speaking!! This is where we find in scriptures that Jesus Christ is the "Wisdom" of God, who just so happens to be the very first thing God brought forth before creating anything, which was his Word (logos)

The Bible contains the Word of God which the Father spoke, and he alone gives it a voice, sense it came out of his mouth, and the Holy Spirit only speaks what he hears to those who have ears to hear!!

I really don't want to go down this route as it digresses from the thread, but you asked me, "Brother, does not the Bible "contain" the Word (Logos) of God?"
To which I reply, most certainly not!

The Logos spoken of in John chapter1 is a person, God himself, the very creator of this universe yet you have limited him to words in a book?

Of course I have no problem that the bible contains some of the words expressed by our Logos/God, but to claim the bible can contain the Logos of God is about as valid as claiming that this present comment contains me, when it is in fact a mere expression of a microscopic part of my thoughts.

Rather than Logos meaning the words themselves, Logos also means the very thought from which the word proceeds, the source of those words himself.
Just as Jesus said in Matt15v18 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart", so the words that come from Jesus express the heart of God.
Taken from Strongs
3056
lógos (from 3004/légō, "speaking to a conclusion") – a word, being the expression of a thought; a saying. 3056/lógos("word") is preeminently used of Christ (Jn 1:1), expressing the thoughts of the Father through the Spirit.

To me, Logos more accurately refers to the very source of everything in this universe. So back to your reference scripture.-
Heb4v12For the word of God (Logos) is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
This is not merely a command to go to the bible, but to go back to the source, to Logos/God himself. For the humble of heart, God gives wisdom and grace, and it is that which reveals the dividing of soul and spirit, not the bible, although obviously the bible may well be a valid part of the exercise.
The reason that the bible alone is not sufficient to do that is because, just as with all spiritual gifts, it depends on the humility of the hearer. Whether the spiritual gifts, or bible scholarship, pride and arrogance will always give the user power to prove to anyone that he is totally correct! The real issue is pride, not scholarship.

So notwithstanding everything you have said, hearing the Holy Spirit is completely separate from learning the bible. In fact, from my experience, witnessed regularly on this forum, the biggest enemies of hearing God speak today are those with bible or theology qualifications!
Their biblical understanding apparently proves conclusively to them that God stopped speaking to people long ago! Its called cessationism and is a stalwart of theologians.

Just look to the bible and you will see that it disproves your theory. ie. What bible did Moses read to confirm that his visions were from God.
Look at Peter when he had the vision/revelation of the great sheet being lowered containing unclean animals, and heardthe command to kill and eat. Fully compliant with your theology, Peter refused because it went against his theology! It took some convincing, plus a knock at the door by the servants of Cornelius to convince him that his theology was outdated.

As a child of non christians, my first encounter with God was as a child alone in my bedroom. I became conscious of what I now know was the presence of the Holy Spirit and was deeply convicted of His intense love. My response was simply, "Lord please don't forget me" He didn't!
Several years later, still in childhood, I had an amazing revelation where God told me in words that he lived in my heart and not a building (the church across the street where I was standing), and that although everybody was bad including me, He alone had made a way for me to go to heaven. All deeply spiritual truths despite never reading a bible.
It was not until my mid 20s that I heard the gospel from some evangelists and realised that they were talking about the God I already knew.
