Baptism

Baptism

Hi all.
I have a question.
Before you ask, Yes, I have been baptised.

I'm just wondering, When you are Baptised / Born again, The "Old you" dies on the cross with Jesus, and you are Born again with the Holy Spirit living inside of you. So, If after you have been Born again, and you still live a sinful life for a while but then say, Right, Enough of leading this sinful life, I am going to follow Jesus now, and lead a victorious life, will it affect your relationship with God at all ?
From being "Born again" and still sinning, then giving up being a sinner, And following the Lord.

Thanks.

Yes it will affect your relationship with God.

It would be like going out from being in the fold, and now going into the Shepherd's arms.

When I think of baptism, I think of a little boy playing in mud. The neighbor sees him and says, "that boy is filthy".
So I drag him off to the bath and scrub him clean (baptism).
Then I take him back to my neighbor and say, "look, there's not a trace of dirt on him". My neighbor says, "I hardly recognize him without the dirt, he's like a new boy".
Now I do my best to keep him from getting dirty but I know sooner or later he will get dirty again, I keep the bath ready.

There is so much filth in this world, it's almost impossible to stay completely clean but God is always there, when we repent, to free us from our sins, wash us clean, so we can start again fresh.

Dear Born2LoveYou,

May God be with you!

Baptism is a Sacrament. Jesus said that you must be born of water and Spirit. A Sacrament is instituted by Christ, has a visible sign (water) and impart invisible Grace. This grace washed away the sins of Adam and Eve (original sin) and makes us truly children of God and part of His family.

It is still important as the child grows to teach them about Christ. They then must "confirm" their commitment to Christ through the Sacrament of Confirmation (instituted by Christ, visible sign=laying on of hands of the Bishop and holy oils and imparting invisible Grace)

While I know these are not the beliefs of all here, this is the Catholic teaching on Baptism.

God bless you.

Baptism is indeed symbolic of your death and burial (immersion) and you ressurection with Christ to new life.The real change comes when you give your heat to Jesus- but His ways are different from those of most religious systems- He works from the inside out- Get bapized for it is an act of obediance but don't focus on the outward struggle as much as the inner changes that bring real results-
2Co 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
2Co 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
as we focus our attention on Jesus we are changed evermore into His image so indeed the turning to Him will have a huge effect on your relationship- it will open the doors to revelation and freedom that is your birthright as a born again child of the King- many blessings brother Larry

Dear Born2loveyou,
Do not be fooled by those that teach baptism is only symbolic, for Jesus Christ, His Apostles and all the early church taught that Baptism is a sacrament and needed for salvation, this symbolic baptism taught by some was only invented during the reformation by people like John calvin and the like, but it was never taught in the 1st century church or by the Apostles, for if baptism was not needed that St. Peter on the day of pentocost would not have said to be baptized for the remission of sins,

2:38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(Acts 2:38)

What need was there to baptize 3000 on that day if faith alone was sufficient, below some other scriptures that speak of baptism and what it means to christians;

Fact Scripture
Salvation is through baptism and Faith, not Faith alone.
“He who believes and is baptized will be saved†(Mark 16:16)
Through baptism we receive the second birth which is of water and the spirit
“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the spirit, he can not enter the kingdom of God†(John 3:5)
Baptism washes away sins
“And now why are you waiting?Arise and be baptised, and wash away your sins†(Acts 22:16)
In baptism there is forgiveness of sins
“Men and breathren, what shall we do?†Then Peter said to them “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins†(Acts 2:37,38)
Baptism is dying with the Lord Jesus Christ and rising with Him
“Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?†(Romans 6:3,4)
“Now if we died with Christ, we believe we shall also live with Him†(Romans 6: 8)

Another result of baptism is newness of life
“therefore we were buried with Him through baptism in to death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life†(Rom 6:4)
In baptism we put on Christ
“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ†(Galatians 3;27)
Baptism is becoming a member of the church and the church is the body of Christ.there is no salvation apart from the body of Christ
“I now rejoice in my suffering for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the affliction of Christ, for the sake of his body, which is the church. (colossians 1:24)

May the lord bless

Matthew 9:12-14(HCSB)

12 But when He heard this, He said, "Those who are well don't need a doctor, but the sick do. 13 Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn't come to call the righteous, but sinners." 14 Then John's disciples came to Him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?"
In Him,
Rick :preach:

And yet here is a clear instance of salvation without water baptism- there is a greater baptism- the baptism of the Holy Spirit ( Acts 11:16)
Act 11:1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.
Act 11:2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,
Act 11:3 Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.
Act 11:4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,
Act 11:5 I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:
Act 11:6 Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
Act 11:7 And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.
Act 11:8 But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.
Act 11:9 But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
Act 11:10 And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.
Act 11:11 And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me.
Act 11:12 And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house:
Act 11:13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;
Act 11:14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.
Act 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
Act 11:17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

Baptism is the outward proclamation of the inward conversion, done out of obedience to God's commands. However, it is NOT necessary for salvation. In His dying moments, Christ Himself makes that abundantly clear:

Luke 23:
39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

40But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."

42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[f]"
43Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

The thief was certainly not baptized by water, but acknowledged the Lord before His death and is a full heir to the entire kingdom.

Dear Boanerges,
You said;

And yet here is a clear instance of salvation without water baptism- there is a greater baptism- the baptism of the Holy Spirit ( Acts 11:16)

Using this scripture to prove your point.

Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

We must remember to always use scripture in it proper context, as the scripture you have used here to try and prove that water baptism was not performed will work against you, as in this St. Peter’s is talking of the conversion of Cornelius and household and if we look at the actual account in scripture we will see that Cornelius and his household where all baptized;

10:47 Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?
10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.(Acts 10:47-48)

So we see here that Cornelius and his household where indeed baptized.

Bassmasa you said;

The thief was certainly not baptized by water, but acknowledged the Lord before His death and is a full heir to the entire kingdom.

This is true that the thief was not baptized,but as you said he made a public declaration of his faith,not only this he showed that he was repentant and deserved the punishment he was receiving but that the Lord was innocent of any wrong,he defended the Lord, he believed in very hard circumstances,he was more concerned with his spiritual life them his physical life, and because of all this the LORD said to him “Today you will be with me in paradise”, besides if he did live he would have follow the instruction of the Lord Jesus and His Apostles and have been baptized and also baptism is being crucified with Christ,this man literally was crucified with Christ.

God Bless

Baptism is not absolutely necessary. Was Christ saved before he was baptized? Still baptism can be nice and helpful. It's like taking a bath, I don't need to take a bath to live, but I sure smell nicer if I do.

So daniel2macarius am I understanding you correctly? Are you saying they were baptized in the Holy Ghost before they were saved? I don't think I can agree to that.

Hi adonaicole,You said;

Baptism is not absolutely necessary. Was Christ saved before he was baptized? Still baptism can be nice and helpful. It's like taking a bath, I don't need to take a bath to live, but I sure smell nicer if I do.

The simple answer to this question is that Jesus was not in need of saving, he was and still is perfect and without sin thus he did not need salvation, for He is salvation,He is the Ressurection and the Life, and was God before He come to earth, and from the Time of His conception in the Virgin Marys womb he was Fully God and Fully man this is why we call the Virgin Mary the Mother of God, for Jesus is God, the Holy Spirit did not come and save Jesus at His Baptism,i am sorry if this is what you believe, but it is wrong and if anyone else would like to help our brother please do.i will leave you with these verses.

1:23
Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us.(Matt 1:23)

1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
1:2 He was in the beginning with God.(John 1:1-2)

“And now why are you waiting?Arise and be baptised, and wash away your sins†(Acts 22:16)

May God Bless You
