It's Only A Quarter

It's Only a Quarter
Several years ago, a preacher from out-of-state accepted a call to a church in Tampa, Fla. Some weeks after he arrived, he had an occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, "You'd better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it." Then he thought, "Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worryabout this little amount? Anyway, the bus company gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a 'gift from God' and keep quiet." When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, "Here, you gave me too much change. The driver, with a smile, replied, "Aren't you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking a lot lately about going somewhere to worship. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I'll see you at church on Sunday." When the preacher stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, "Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter."Our lives are the only Bible some people will ever read. This is a really scary example of how much people watch us as Christians and will put us to the test! Always be on guard and remember that you carry the name of Christ on your shoulders when you call yourself "Christian."Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

Yah,

I liked it too Violet and it goes to show..... we never know who is watching. But above all Jesus is watching.

That's scary. I make it a point to never, ever count the change when I get it back.

Hey Banareth,

Once a gas station attendant gave me $10. too much but I was down the road before I discovered it. I turned around and came back and when I told him, he was shocked and thanked me profusely as he said that would have come out of his pocket at the end of the day. He really could not believe that I would do that. So that was a good testimony.

What a beautiful story! Thank you Dusty! It truly is extremely sobering to think about how many people actually do watch us to see what kind of "Christians" we really are. Here's another interesting story. This one actually happened to me. Before I became a stay-at-home mom, I was a realtor. My first client when I started was a single woman I believe in her early 40's who had never been married and who was very logical and down to earth. She was nice and friendly but she also had a caution philosophy. Her thoughts about "Jesus" and "Christianity" were ambiguous at best and her take was that the other religions had just as much right to be considered as Christianity, even though she sis not subscribe to any of them. Her biggest "downer" about Christianity was the fact that it claimed to be the only "true" religion (her words), but even bigger was her belief that Christians were nothing but hypocrites who said one thing but did the opposite. That had been her experience with people who claimed to be Christians. I realized from the start that the Lord had put this woman in my path but I also realized that talking about Jesus and trying to convince her with words would not work so I kept my mouth shot except for saying things like "Praise God" or "Thank you Lord" when the situation asked for that and even then these expressions were almost involuntary, seeing that that's how I talk! Instead, I just treated her as nicely as I could! I went extremely out of my way in helping her sell her home and try to find another one. At first, I could see that she was suspicious, but I continued doing what I was doing and a few weeks into our time together she asked me about Christianity and why I was so devoted to it. She didn't get saved or anything, but I really thought she would, in the end. Well, here comes the bad part! I sold her home in 2 days to a "Christianity" couple who lived in the same neighborhood. I was very thorough on inspections and I was very cooperative with their realtor and home inspector, so as to avoid any problems. The sale went through and everyone seemed very happy until about 2 weeks after when she got a letter from this couple's lawyer which said she was being sued for misrepresenting the condition of the home. Needless to say, it was not true and in the end they did go through with it, but for a while, they made her life miserable with constant phone calls and threats while all the time talking in "Christian" language and telling her that God was watching and He was going to avenge them. I was with her all throughout this ordeal even though I wasn't her realtor anymore and I can't tell you how ashamed I felt for these people. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that her opinion of Christians and Christianity was solidified by these people's behavior and she ended up telling me that the support and goodness I showed her more than likely had nothing to do with me being a Christian but just being a good human being! She wrote a letter to the owner of the real-estate company I was working for praising my work and character, but I was deeply saddened by the fact that my witness had been obliterated by the very people that should have joined in with me to bring her into the Kingdom.

Wow, Laura,

What a story and that is exactly the reason that some so called Christians give a bad rap for others. I am so glad you showed real Christian love and helped this woman through it all.

Thank you! I have no idea what became of her. After looking for a long time for a home here she decided she would go back to her home town of Niagara Falls and buy a home there! I've tried staying in touch, but to no avail!
