Melchizedek

I searched through past threads and was surprised to not find one concerning Melchizedek, other than the ones related to tithing.
So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.” As He also says in another place: “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek”; who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,” (Hebrews 5:5-10 NKJV)

Here's my question, why would Jesus become a high priest in the order of Melchizedek if he was Melchizedek?

Well its important to remember the context of this truth is to establish a "priesthood" that was ordained before the Levite priesthood was established through the law of Moses. In essence to established a authority in God that was greater than what was represented by and through the law of Moses. Of course we should also consider that these were both symbolic of the true Ministry of Christ. The scriptures go on to say that some have become dull of hearing as it relates to TRUE righteousness, which Melchizedek (king of righteousness) represents. It is a order of righteousness, with Christ as the head of those who are called into true righteousness. Those who still see "righteousness" as a product of man and mans efforts, will not be able to see this New Order of righteousness.

That's a better explanation than I've read and heard other places. I've always been fascinated by Melchizedek.
There is no record of his father or mother or any of his ancestors—no beginning or end to his life. He remains a priest forever, resembling the Son of God. (Hebrews 7:3 NLT)

I just find him fascinating and enjoy discussing and learning about him. Based on what you're saying Mit, correct me if I'm wrong, you believe Melchizedek to be Jesus incarnate then. I'm not discounting your opinion, I've not formed my own as of yet. I've heard it preached that he was Shem. Any thoughts.

Yes I would say that is an honest reading of the limited scripture we have.."king of righteousness" could only be Christ Jesus in my view. We know that the Lord appeared in certain times and to certain believers to fulfill the Will of God.

Even I don't have an opinion on this.. I have the same question as you mentioned! Why Jesus would become a high priest in the order of Melchizedek.. May be below 2 arguments hold good,

A type of Christ
Preincarnate Christ himself
