I think its when we allow thoughts to come into our mind that basically come from our own flesh...This can be through a lot of things..TV culture...friends..family..etc... We don't always set our mind on the good things, like the bible teaches.
Who ever is born of God sinneth not, for he can not sin for he born of God, and his seed remains in him. Jesus was God and we know that God can not be tempted, yet Jesus was tempted to do evil. How can this be? That is because temptation is only that which is common to man. It is only in our human nature where man is tempted to sin, not in the divine nature which can not sin. Jesus was never tempted in his divine nature, only in his human nature. After fasting for 40 days, he was hungry, and that is where Satan tempted him to sin. If you be the son of God command these stones to be made bread.

Satan shows no mercy. He does not know what you are thinking but he can see your actions which tips him off to how well you are doing. The spirit is willing but flesh is weak. The flesh is always lusting against spirit, and the spirit against the flesh they are contrary to one another so that you can not do what you want. Learning to change over from the carnal mind to the spiritual mind of Christ which dwells within you is the key. This is called "repentance". The word repentance means "to change your mind" Not to change what you are thinking but to change over to the mind of Christ.
How do you change to the mind of christ?
The name "satan" means "accuser" he is expert at accusing us, and he uses religious people.

Feeling convicted of sin is a fairly obvious sign that you are virtuous, otherwise it wouldn't bother you.
The damned do not notice their own sin any more than a fish notices that it is wet.
Look at it this way, sin is like a bad odor, be around it long enough and you get to the point you just can't smell it.
Some folks even start to like the stink.
Read C.S. Lewis, he covered a lot of this.

As to the OP, we invite sin by actions that allow us to be exposed to it.
examples - watching movies with inapppropriate content that may inspire lust,
going out with friends who have a habit of drinking too much, allowing oneself to dwell on unproductive or gloomy thoughts,
low self esteem is often caused by a pre-occupation with oneself, anxiety is the same, (I find that the less I think about myself the happier I am)
lying is most often the result of pride (i.e I will lie to hide my faults or make myself appear greater than I am)

That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. I struggled with my walk in my twenties and thirties. One backslide after another, until I fully repented and let go of what I thought I had control of. I fully accepted Jesus as Lord, and the Holy Spirit cleaned house. I had never fully yielded until then.

For me it seems to work both ways, i.e. I could draw the correlation either way. I can see a lack of reading and studying Holy Scripture and praying seem to make me more prone to sin, and if I tolerate a pattern of known sin in my life I have far less desire for His word and for prayer. I can try to force myself to read the Word and pray under those conditions but it seems very hindered.

Simple... we have passive minds not taking control over our thoughts...

I am sure you are fully aware that after you accepted Jesus as your saviour you should have felt certain things that were not there before. Your desire to know the Lord abounded and every time you would here praise and worship your heart leaped for joy, to the point were tears would come to your eyes. These are not normal feelings that the world has. They are spiritual senses that became alive after you were given a new heart. These spiritual senses are exact counter parts to our physical senses. Our physical senses allows us operate in this physical world were these new spiritual senses allows us to operate in the spiritual world. They are apart of the mind of Christ, in the same way all of our physical senses are connected to our physical mind.
The Apostle Paul tells us that strong meat of God Word is only given to those who by practice of use exercised their spiritual senses. Hebrews 5:14 . Most believers don't even have a clue to these senses, and think it will be given to them after they are dead!!! Knowing you have these, and needing to exercising them gives you that ability to start now using them. Walking by faith uses these to their fullest.
How else can we lay hold upon eternal life, or to be able to taste see that the Lord is good?

Let me define "sin" for you Polly...It means to "miss the mark" or to "fall short" in that God made us in His Image and glory, we have all fallen short of that glory! We have all sinned...We are all in the process of being delivered from this fallen condition. Fear and anxiety are signs that we are "coming short" of the "peace" and confidence we should have, In Christ. Now according to the mercy and grace we have in Christ, if we see a "sin" and are willing to allow God to help us? Then there is no judgment from God, against us.
But is it a sin to be anxious and depressed? Why would feelings be sins?
Well all sin comes first through a thought or feeling right? Lust is a feeling..right?
Lust is different than arousal and desire. Lust leads to sexual abuse usually, but arousal and desire are kept on the minds.
My point was all these things come from "feelings" in some way...right?
I don't think so. Sin is an action. But the feeling CAN be sinful as it leads to sin...
