Jacob Vs. Isreal

If God changed Jacob's name to Israel in Genesis 35:10, why is he still called Jacob? Why do people continue to say we worship the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? When God changed Abram and Sarai's names to Abraham and Sarah (adding the h sound - the breath of God), their old names are never used again. Not so with Israel (or Jacob)

Have you noticed that when Jacob is acting in the flesh, God refers to him as Jacob, but when he's acting in the Spirit, God refers to him as Israel?

Because Jacob represents a certain aspect of the promise to Abraham, and Israel represents a certain aspect of Gods promise. You could say Jacob in some way represents the "flesh" and Israel represents the "spirit" in certain instances of scripture... Its not a simple answer and takes some deeper study into types and the meanings of names and covenants etc...

Jacob represents the Jews.Israel represents where God's behaving children occupy,so it means Christianity,now.When Paul asks,who
is a Jew,he is talking about a subject where Jewishness is not the real subject...justification is.

My take on this is just tradition. Christians have been calling him Jacob for centuries and that's what we're used to. God changed Jacob's name. God has the right to refer to him as Jacob when he is acting in the flesh, but I do not believe that gives us the right. I worship the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel.

Like I said, its a pretty deep issue that cannot be answered without some in-depth study... and when God speaks in different places you have to look at the context and what He is trying to express by using the Name Jacob and Israel....so context and type are key and without understanding these things it can be a little confusing? Find scripture that you are concerned with and lets try to discern the context?

Because He is still the God of Jacob and the God of Israel and both names still have important meaning in context of many promises made by God through out the scriptures. I think that could be used as a way to say that they believe in the God of Promise and they themselves are "Israel" His people...
