Jesus In The Genealogy Of Genesis?

I'm not one to put a lot of stock in the meaning of names.  If simply naming someone determines their outcome in life, everyone would be naming their children "Rich" or "Halcyon", or "Colossal Cash".  Usually, the only time I pay attention to the name of a person is when God changes their name.  Abram becomes Abraham, Jacob becomes Israel, Saul becomes Paul, and the list goes on.

However, I listened to a lecture by Chuck Missler who points out that there is a Gospel of Jesus foretold in the genealogy from Adam to Noah:

Adam - Man
Seth - Appointed
Enosh - Mortal
Kenan - Sorrow
Mahalalel - The Blessed God
Jared - Shall come down
Enoch - Teaching
Methuselah - His death shall bring
Lamech - The Despairing
Noah - Rest

This fascinated me.  "Man appointed mortal sorrow, the Blessed God shall come down teaching His death shall bring despairing rest".

It's hard for me to ignore this.  Every day, the bible fascinates me and piques my interest to dig further.

Hebrew naming is not like our ways of naming a child, so that the name usually stays with the child for life. Not at all!

(I need to get off to work soon, so this will be kept very short, without a lot of information!)

People are named when children, all right, but as they develop personalities, talents, careers, even develop legacies, they are renamed. This is common, expected. Even when they are written into literature, especially the Bible, they are often given names that further inform the reader regarding the personalities or attributes of the characters of the persons.

Remember the man named, in English, "Fool"? Can you imagine his mother looking at him as a baby, thinking, "You are really an idiot! I'm naming you 'Fool.' Deal with it!"

Don't let that discourage you! You interest in their names will give you so much more knowledge of the persons about whom you are reading!

Chuck Missler is misleading you.

Enoch means "dedicated"
Jared means "rose" (the flower) or descending
Enosh means "man"
Lamech means "poor made low" (whatever that's supposed to mean)

Internet says Jared means "descending", Missler says it means "Shall come Down". I'm not seeing the difference. Anyway, if it's on the Internet, it must be true......at least that's what the State Farm commercial says.....

The point is that he has fudge the meanings to suit his own beliefs.
In some circles that is called LYING.

if you don't fudge the meanings it comes out as gibberish
Adam -Red
Seth -Anointed; compensation
Enosh -man
Kenan -possession
Mahalalel -praise of God
Jared -descending
Enoch -dedicated
Methuselah -he has sent his death
Lamech -poor made low
Noah -Comfort; long-lived; repose

The Bible is a wonderful book, but not a "magical" book.
Why do people insist on searching for hidden secret meanings in everything?
Is the gospel not plain enough?

" if it's on the Internet, it must be true"
Why is it that those who have nothing sensible to say always turn to cheap shots?

Hebrew words are like English words, in that they can have several meanings. For example (and this is, of course, extreme) the English word cleave. Do you cut up your wife or cling to her? :D

Anyway, this is why one cannot look up a biblical word in the Young's and assume they have a complete understanding of the intention of the Author. Can't do that using a ( . . . uh . . . uh . . . can't think of the name of that Bible that adds several meanings of a word in their text. Starts with an A. That Bible often just muddies the waters.)

Some of the meanings fit, while stated different ways, just as in English, as Tropical mentioned. Same thing in English. Try looking up a word in an Oxford dictionary and also in a Webster. Words are not stagnate.

Here's what I did and found it in the priestly names too which I did myself. I've never heard anyone do this before so if it is a ruse then why is it in the scriptures do it again...

Adam אָדָם ruddy, man, person, or mankind
Seth שֵׁת Substituted or appointed – Gen 4:25; put; who puts; fixed
Enos אֱנוֹשׁ mortal, sickly, despaired of; forgetful
Cainan קֵינָן to chant a dirge; lament – Amos 8:10; Ezekiel 27:32; 1 Samuel 1:17
Mahalaleel מַהֲלַלְאֵל From מַ, praise הֲלַלְ, God אֵל – literally “From Praise God” or “Praising God”
Jared יָרֶד a ruling; commanding; coming down
Enoch חֲנוֹךְ teaching
Methuselah מְתוּשָׁלַח dwelling-places; afflicted; his death will bring
Lamech לָמֶךְ poor; made low; good for nothing
Noah נֹחַ repose; consolation; rest

Man, appointed mortal [and] sorrow[ful]. From praise God coming down teaching. His death will bring [the] poor consolation.

I present some thoughts on the sentence. Because Adam sinned, and because we all come from him, we die – made mortal1. Because we sinned, we are to have our days full of sorrow2. Indeed! Praise God, He (Jesus) came down3 and taught4 us that by His death on the cross He will give us Peace5!

1Genesis 2:17“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

2Genesis 3:17 “And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;” Genesis 3:19 “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”

3John 6:33 “For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.” John 6:48 “I am that bread of life.”

4John 12:49 “For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.”

5Colossians 1:20 “And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.” Luke 4:18-21 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

You could even cut and paste the Hebrew and put it into Google’s translation and see that the meanings are still close even with the differences between modern and ancient Hebrew. You’ll have to separate Mahalale-el to get proper translation. Cainan is lost as noted and Seth has a differing meaning today.

These names mentioned in Genesis 5, that is, from Adam to Noah, present the Master’s plan. Which is also done in the priests named which I did on my own:

It's interesting that people jump down my throat about not believing in the traditional view of inerrancy yet no one has anything to say about this? lol

I don't look for any hidden messages in the Bible. If I notice something then I notice it but I don't seek them out. I'm not smart enough to do that anyway, I don't think. That being said, I like seeing stuff like the original post.

I love Bible study, and if I am going to study a particular subject, of course, I am going to study it as thoroughly as I can, using all the tools the Bible offers, including the names of the persons in the study, the areas where they lived, the peoples mentioned, their society. That's just common sense for a thorough study. And, of course, there are times when we just want to get down into the lighter issues -- the surface issues. If I were still a teacher, I would use the thorough study for teaching adults, who ought to already know the lighter issues, but if I were still teaching 5th graders, it would be the lighter study. AND if I were to teach kindergarten, it would be even lighter.

There is nothing wrong with applying oneself to studies that take in every avenue one can imagine, as long as we keep it real.

Yep, I've seen this before and I have been blessed by it. You can't make this stuff up! Glory to God!

I look at it like this: Since God made the wonders of the universe from the single celled organism to spiral galaxies then He's able to put things, hidden things, into His word.

Proverbs 25:2 (KJV)
[It is] the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings [is] to search out a matter.

Revelation 1:6 (KJV)
And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

I agree. I believe there can definitely be hidden things in the Bible. I just don't look for them.

Actually, Genesis is the geanology of Jesus.

From the beginning when Adam and Eve sinned, it was the Lord Jesus who came to the Garden, killed the animals, shed the blood, and gave the skins to Adam and Eve. That is a picture of what Jesus was going to do for all men because ALL men are sinners and must be washed in the shed blood of a sacrifice who is in fact the Lord Jesus Christ.

The very first word of Scripture is b'reishit (Genesis 1:1) and the last word is amen (Revelation 22:21). Puting these words together we obtain:

"In the beginning was Amen."

Likewise, putting the very first and last letters of the Scriptures toegether yields the word ben, meaning "a son":

From beginning to end, then, we see that the Scriptures point to the Lord Jesus as the Faithful and True Son of the Father, the rightful King of the kingdom of God.

I'd like to take credit for this but I can't. http://www.hebrew4christians.com/Prayers/The_Lord_s_Prayer_6/the_lord_s_prayer_6.html

I couldn't copy and paste the words in Hebrew.

Dude, I read b'reishit as something else. I had to do a double take on that one.

Pretty cool though.

This is Genesis 1:1 in Hebrew:

בראשית ברא אלהים את השמים ואת הארץ׃

If you take the word for “son” in Hebrew (בר) and the word for “I make” (אשית) and put them together, you have the first word of the Scriptures: “in the beginning” (בראשית).

John 1:1-3 (KJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

There is a LOT more to Gen 1:1 than anyone realized... people are always looking for God... well Gen 1:1 is His signature. Check out this mathematics site on Gen 1:1 http://www.whatabeginning.com/

What is that image? Looks like 1/2 a pentagram...
It's the symbol for the band Oh, Sleeper.

The pentagram can symbolize a goats head, within the top two points being the horns. The horns in the broken pentagram symbolizes God's victory over Satan and evil. There is a verse in Isaiah that says God will cut off the horns of evil ones so that's where they get it. I think it's interesting.
