The Light Of Men

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Joh 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Something was dwelling in the Word that was in the beginning. What does the light of men mean?
In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

If you read all the OT encounters with God it's in deep horrific darkness. This is because God is so pure that our limitations and faults are pushed back on us, so what is actually deep horrific darkness is our own sinful flesh bouncing back on us in a way we never understood. Seeing how this keeps up from pushing through to God as a matter of rule (Abraham, Moses etc. did it) that when Jesus came and gave us the light we need to get through to the Father, the vale being torn. Just my thoughts.

I agree with you here. I also see this....

2Co 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

We know also this....

Tit 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

I believe the time God shined his light into our hearts was back in the beginning when God said light be! I believe that was when the grace needed for salvation appeared unto all men.

I noticed that in this verse it says that the life that was in the Word in the beginning was, "light of men" not the "light of God" Why would it not say the light of God since God is light, and it is the light of God that gives life, not the light of men?

Good question. Well, I look at it as poetry instead of possessive. The "light of men" is Jesus as in "Jesus is the light source of mankind" instead of the understanding "the light of men" is the source of the light. We don't have any light, only Jesus does, so Jesus is the source of the light of mankind.

Psalms 36:9 (KJV)
For with thee [is] the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

John 12:46 (KJV)
I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

Interesting as Jesus said he was the light of the world, but then he tells his apostles....

Mat 5:14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Since we are not the actual light of the world directly, but indirectly by only reflecting that light.

Then we have this scripture that tells us something really cool.

Eph 5:13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that
becomes visible is light.

When light is shined on an object it becomes visible, and not only does it become visible, but it also becomes a light source because it is now reflecting that light.

John 1:4, In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Since the life that was in the Word, that was in the beginning was the, "light of men" , and we know that when light shines on someone they to reflect that light as revealed in Eph 5:13 We should be able to conclude that men who were reflecting the light of Jesus was living in him in the beginning. Or in other words we were in Christ before time began according as God has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world! Eph 1:4

Hello, in those verses the word Logos is used, knowledge so in him was th knowledge of life to man man aware giving him reason and understanding....had to think about that one!
