Saying God's Name In Vain.

okay. Thank you, Mitspa. I know we disagree regarding this subject, although I think it is actually because we are misunderstanding one another. :)

Good morning brother! Abba means father, which technically is a title also. However this title was a special title that I think Christ wanted us to know to show the type of relationship he had with the father.
Right..so all we "inherit" is a product of having the Spirit that cries Abba Father...without this knowledge all the Names of God are just vanity to men in this world.

What are you saying? Without the Spirit, the knowledge of all God's names are vanity? I guess that's true.

So to put it in different terms.. It's like saying my car is a car, another person says its a Subaru, I say it's a wrx, and mitspA says yeah well it doesn't matter what you call it because you can't drive without an engine

Hi all, silly question, but what does it mean to say the Lord's name in vain? If one says things like good Lord, Lord help me, God, you're stupid(not saying God's stupid but saying to someone they're stupid), does that constitute to saying His name in vain.?

Hi Patricia,

The Scriptures speak of taking the Lords name in vain. Essentuially this means calling yourself a Christian and not living like one. To take the Lord's name means to become a Christian, one is entering a relationship with God. It's similar to taking the man's name in marriage. If one does this and then forsakes the relationship with God they have taken His name in vain.
To address they phrases I don't think it's a good idea to use God's name in any sense that is not reverent.

I never saw it like that. I just saw it as using his name as a cuss word, or using His name in a lie, like as God is my witness. Thanks.

You could think of it this way. When we commit our armed services to a conflict, we often talk about the reason we send them into battle. There needs to be a good reason worthy of any loss of life, otherwise we refer to the soldiers as dying in vain. Meaning for no reason or value or purpose. I think it is the same with using the Lord's name. Do it for a good and worthy purpose.
