Matthew 5:32

There were two schools of thought about "divorce" in the Old Testament. One was if your wife displeases you in any way you could divorce her. The other and the original intent by Moses was except for sexual immorality could a man divorce his wife. Jesus's words brought back Moses real reason for allowing divorce which was only because of fornication was it permitted. But, then in Mark we find this...

Mar 10:2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
Mar 10:3 He answered them, "What did Moses command you?"
Mar 10:4 They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away."
Mar 10:5 And Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.
Mar 10:6 But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female.'
Mar 10:7 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife,
Mar 10:8 and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh.
Mar 10:9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."

The original purpose and intent by God was that in the beginning there is no reason ever for divorce. Only because of the hardness of mans heart was divorce even considered to be an option. As far as God is concerned there is no reason for divorce no matter what.
Which to us is a good thing, sense we are married to Christ, and he will never divorce us his Church.

Divorce is wrong, there is no way around that. Living a lie is also wrong. So if a couple cannot or will not reconcile and be faithful to each other they may be divorced. From the RCC and Orthodox point of view, divorced people should not remarry, they are essentially tainted goods. Protestants tend to be very liberal in their views on divorce and allow whatever the individual is comfortable with.

edit: Divorce can be tricky, but often isn't and really shouldn't be, morally speaking. It can be justified but only for very few reasons -- for safety, if one spouse was the victim of the other's infidelity, etc.

However, if divorce takes place unjustly, it is breaking a holy contract when they each said "I do." There are also annulments, but an annulment is different because it's a recognition that no marriage had even taken place. A divorce is the breaking of what had taken place, and it becomes adultery if one divorces and then remarries.

I have two friends (one currently in the Army and other just recently honorably discharged). The one who is discharged was served divorce papers by his wife who had cheated on him. It would have been just had he served them to her in fact. But one was unfaithful and a divorce was reasonable, but only on his end.

My other friend who is still in the army cheated on his wife unfortunately. I don't know who served the divorce papers, but his wife was justified in divorcing him. He remarried and by that logic is committing further adultery.

Overall, the way the culture has treated divorce, even within many Christian groups, it is wrong. Marriage is intended to be a holy union. It is even called the Domestic Church because it is supposed to be where the love and righteousness of God is supposed to start.

How do you feel about this?

I always wondered how Jesus gives grounds for divorce in Matt 5:32 when He said Mark 10:9 (never divorce).

I understand now that He is talking to us, Christians! 1 Cor 7:15 sheds perfect light 'But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace'

When Jesus mentions sexual immorality in that verse as grounds for divorce, it is very interesting indeed! He did not mention 'if our spouse is a murderer'. He did not mention 'if our spouse is a racist'. He did not mention 'if our spouse is a thief'. He did not mention 'if our spouse is a wife beater'. So, why sexual immorality / unfaithful? It is because that sin specifically causes our spouses heart to 'move on'. When they do that they lose respect for us .....and God. This in turn results in beatings and the many other mortal sins Jesus did not mention. They do not want to be in a sanctified state. They do not want the anointing / holiness / conviction of sin a Christian brings with them. They leave us and God.

I agree 100% with Jesus and Paul in these verses.

Heb 13:4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.

1 Cor 7:39 A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.

Mal 2:16 For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her, says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.”

1 Cor 7:12-15 To the rest I say (I, not the Lord) that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you to peace.

Mar 10:12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.

Moses law allowed divorce for almost any reason. In Matt. Jesus lays the grounds for divorce.
Adultery! It is the ONE ground for divorce.

Now it has nothing to do with how I feel, It is what the Lord laid down. IMO it shows how important the family unit is to God that He would limit it tot hat ONE, but that is just me. I have been maried now for 47 years so it is of no real concern to me at all.

During an interview Billy Graham's wife was asked if she had ever considered divorce,
her reply was "Divorce no, murder yes."

How many whom have voted are men and how many women.

Just wondering what the gender split is.

I know in many discussion of divorce that genders think differently about it.

So far the only people who have commented on this are men. Though I hope my opinion isn't viewed as a gender-biased one.

I read that in one of her books as well but can not remember its name. If you asked my wife, she would say the say thing and that is why I hide all the knives.

I hear you but that is not me. I advise to stay married, forgive and move on.

To divorce ones mate can also be a temptation to do. How many have thought about doing just that but overcame it by the Word of God?

Greetings;

I'm not divorced, but the cat better watch out...

Jesus was talking to Jews.Peter(married) was the apostle to Jews,Paul(unmarried) was the apostle to the gentiles. So if Paul is
unmarried, that leaves the stay- marry-problem to the Holy Ghost.Jesus works through the Book. The GH works through the heart.
So,if a fellow church member is divorced,I don't advise them to stay single.I've seen divorce preceding couples getting married.

bye
