Ten Depend on Two

"On these two commandments (to love God and our neighbor) hang all the law and the prophets."

New Testament verses which unequivocally require obedience to God's law, such as 1 John 2:3-4, are said to refer to the new law of "Two Commandments" with which, it is claimed, Jesus replaced the Ten.

Sounds legit, right?

Jesus' red-lettered words above actually communicate the antithesis of that idea. He said that it is upon those Two that "all the law and the prophets (which include the Ten Commandments) hang, or depend. In order for a thing to depend upon something else, doesn't the dependent thing need to first exist? Yes. In order for the Ten Commandments to depend on the Two Commandments, the Ten also must first exist. And exist they do, for just as James tells us that those who kill go from being righteous before God to being a transgressor of the law before God, the same holds true for the other nine. Let us not fight against God's law, but pray that Jesus would live out His perfect obedient life through us each day. Amen.

I agree, to some extent, in what I think you mean but the meaning I take from the verses is that it is out of love of God and each other that the rest should follow. The 2 commandments have to be first to even understand the other 8. Not to be confused with the 613 (?) laws of the Mosaic Law.

The quote posted by my brother comes from Matthew 22:38-40......
38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Those are wonderful directions and I love them! However they were not given by Jesus in order to compel men to follow the Law in order to be saved.

Should we strive to obey and follow the Commandments of God ???? YES!

Can we do it. NO!!!

Romans 3:23 clearly says that .........
"ALL have sinned and come short of the approval of God".

IMO, the teaching of Jesus in the text posted the Lawyer of the Jews implies that he was trying to draw Jesus into an argument over the Pharisee's extensive interpretations of over 600 laws they demanded be kept.

Jesus then summarized the two tables of the law........

1). Responsibility to God.
2) Responsibility to man.

He did that by paraphrasing Deut. 6:5 and Lev. 19:18......
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might."

At this point not one single Pharisee could find fault with His answer.

We know the Mosaic law was nailed to the cross (no longer a sin to be uncircumcised, etc.) but the Ten Commandments? No way, for lying, stealing, adultery, etc. are still very much sin. They have not been replaced by the Two Commandments, as some have suggested in an attempt to cover their guilt for violating them, because the Ten are as of yet still hanging on the Two as much so as when Jesus said they were in His day.

I agree !

I really do not see the concern here brother. I do not know of any believer who thinks that because he is a Christian he can steal, lie, use God's name in vain etc. Those are things that we should not want to do under any circumstances.

Anyone who says that they are a Christian and curses all the time or steals from his employer or live in adultery simply is proving that they are not born again...IMO!

Christianity is not a license to commit known sin or to live in known sin. That is what John is saying in 1 John 2:2-4............
"And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him".

John gives us a simple syllogism:
"Everyone who truly knows Christ keeps His commandments; a certain person does not keep His commandments regardless of his verbal comments of claiming to know Him.....CONCLUSION is that that man is a liar!.

My only thought is that we must not think that we have to keep the law to be saved or to stay saved. We obey them because we love God and our fellow man.

I did not mean that the 2 replace the 10 - in that we are agreed. Sin/Disobedience to God will always be sin.

Even so...we all fall short, even Christians. Christians can and do sin but it is not a free pass, we still have to recognize we have sinned and repent. I have sinned - I try to sin no more. It's easier as I have gotten older. :)

Major, the point of this post is to expose the false teaching that the Two Commandments have replaced the Ten Commandments - this is done so that New Testament verses which command obedience to God's law (such as "he that sayeth, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments is a LIAR and the truth is not in him") can be made to refer to the Two, in order that Christian compliance to the Ten might be done away with. Again, the Two have not replaced the Ten, for the Ten are yet still very much dependent on the Two.

Of course we can live without sin, and our choice to not do so doesn't change that. We can do "all things" through Christ, including obey, and when we choose to disobey, the fault is not with Jesus' and His "impossible" command to go and sin no more, the fault is us. Since the creation, there has never been a man yet who has not disobeyed God without first making the choice to follow Satan's temptations.

Yes my friend, I knew that. That is why I cautioned you about trying to keep the law to be saved. We are saved by FAITH not by the law no matter if there were 2 - 10 or a million.

We try to keep the law because we love God and our Christian brethren.

Amen, and the evidence that we have abdicated the throne of our heart to Jesus is the obedience that is manifested in our lives. That's why John said, "Hereby we do know that we know Him (we do know that we are saved by grace) if we keep His commandments. He that sayeth, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments is a liar and the truth is not in Him."

Simply put, the man who says he's been saved by faith, yet steals, lies, commits adultery, breads the Sabbath, etc. is a liar, and the truth, aka Jesus, is not in him.

If we understand loving God and loving all others - we cannot justify sin that not only separates us from God but other human beings as well. Sin harms the sinner and others. It has a ripple effect.

Too lazy to google...splain facepalm, please? I was just saying with mischievous delight that the 613 Mosaic laws came out of the 10. Course, it loses it's deliciousness if it is 614.

Yes sir, that is my understanding. IT is not what we say we are, it what we show others that we are!

May the Lord bless you my friend!
