Satan Incites David.

In my study of 1 Chronicles 21:1, I saw where David numbered Israel because Satan "incited" him to do it. God was not pleased with David as well as David's chief warrior Joab.

I'd like to discuss, how could David who on many occasions "sought the Lord" for His direction, but now, acts quickly before consulting God? Also, what can we learn from this incident.

Perhaps Satan is all to busy making us make foolish decisions which are out of the will of our Lord. Is it time for us to be very diligent to seek the will of God in many of our decisions? Are we not in the last days, and satanic deception is on the rise to temp God's children to sin?

Another great topic Chopper! :D You keep creating some awesome Bible portions to study.

This is something that I had studied a lot. First, let me start by giving my application of this scripture. If we read through previous few chapters, we see all David's military accomplishments. It's simply victory after victory. After so much accomplishments, satan has put pride in David's heart that "he" was able to accomplish so much. David falls to that easily. We see this happen at other places in Bible. Book of Joshua, Chapter 7

2 Joshua sent some of his men from Jericho to spy out the town of Ai, east of Bethel, near Beth-aven. 3 When they returned, they told Joshua, “There’s no need for all of us to go up there; it won’t take more than two or three thousand men to attack Ai. Since there are so few of them, don’t make all our people struggle to go up there.”
4 So approximately 3,000 warriors were sent, but they were soundly defeated. The men of Ai 5 chased the Israelites from the town gate as far as the quarries, and they killed about thirty-six who were retreating down the slope. The Israelites were paralyzed with fear at this turn of events, and their courage melted away.

This is right after battle of Jericho. After Lord brought great victory to Israel, they fail to seek the Lord. They rely on what the spies brought out as information. I wonder if Lord would have let them go into batter without dealing with Achan's sin if Joshua or Israel had sought the Lord.

That is what I learn from this passage. When I receive a blessing, I cannot think I am favored by Lord and miss to seek Him for everything else. It is so very important to seek His will for each and everything. If Lord answers one of our prayers, does not mean we have started thinking in right direction and everything else we think would happen. For each and every thing, it is so very important to seek the will of God. Satan loves to thrive on our pride :)

Thank you Ravindran for those very kind words. Your reply is so very true and very valuable instruction to me. What set me back was the fact that if Satan could incite the mighty David to sin against God, what chance do I have. It is all to easy to make decisions in our very busy lifestyle, and not make room for counsel with our Lord.

You mentioned pride. Oh Ravindran, I'm so very guilty of pride in my life after being a successful leader of churches. There are times when I forget to keep a lid on pride. As a result, foolish decisions have been made. I must ponder seriously on your instructions and if you have more wisdom, please share.

My brother Chopper, we have an advantage that even king David didn't have. We have the Holy Spirit living inside of us! Even the most righteous person in the old testament didn't have God dwelling in them, they experienced Him from the outside. How blessed are we?!!!

In my own personal life, if I am not in daily prayer or meditation to seek and do God's will for me, I go into denial. It does not take long for me to go into self-will run riot mode, and play god.
It must amuse God to see me sabotage my life once again (thousands of times) before I say, "I give up. God please free me from the bondage of self."
A friend of mine once told me we were bankrupt idealists.

Thank you brother! For such nice and kind words.. I am not even close to where you are both spiritually and at wisdom :) It is only me that needs to learn :)

The hardest times in our lives spiritually is when you have plenty of money in the bank, your cars are all paid for, more than enough food. Why operate by faith when you don't have to? This is a very bad place to be as our trust in the Lord is not needed. David found out how many men he had in his army which was a lot more than any of his enemies. He could attack anyone without trusting in the Lord as his army was invincible.
The Apostle Paul learned this the hard way. Faith should never be left in the "idle" mode.

2Co 1:8.. For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself.
2Co 1:9.. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.
2Co 1:10.. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.

I think it hurts His loving heart to have to see you (us) do things in your (our) own way and strength. For He delights when we prosper and are successful. Not when we mess up.

Thank you for the reminder of the Holy Spirit. You are absolutely right and without Him, I'd be lost for sure.(y)

David had the Holy Spirit... after all, he (and He) wrote the Psalms...

Psalms 51:11 (KJV)
Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

It is my understanding that the Holy Spirit did not come to live inside of a believer until after Jesus died and rose from the dead.

I take it that David was referring to the presence of the Lord being with him, not living inside of him.

How do you know? Is there scripture to back up that statement? (I'm really asking, 'cause I don't know)

How about this?

Isaiah 63:11 (KJV)
Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, [and] his people, [saying], Where [is] he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where [is] he that put his holy Spirit within him?

Hmmm that certainly seems to indicate that they had the Holy Spirit living in them. But if this is true then why did they not have the ability to walk in the Spirit and why did were they subject to living by the law, why did they need the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night to lead them, and why was it written that He would write the law in their hearts in the future? If this is true then this leads me to many questions beyond this.

Mykuhl they also did not Have The Blood of Jesus and there is POWER in the BLOOD and in The Name Of JESUS. Think about it.......every knee shall bow and ever tongue confess Jesus is Lord. Every knee which means every evil being including satan himself MUST submit and bow to the name of Jesus. With this said I ask so why do so many Christians refuse to believe or use this ?
Blessings
Jim

Maybe because He was limited to certain people knowing that many wouldn't follow Him, just like today... whereas the guy on the street in the OT might have gotten away with something that a Christian today would not in God's eyes. To whom much is given much is required, Luke 12:48.
