Believers who remain under the law seem to have a greater problem then just keeping the law. Their greatest problem is their ignorance of what happened at the cross. It is impossible to believe that our heavenly Father, after going to all the trouble of getting Jesus on the cross to take care of the sin of humanity, would then allow religionists to set up their own law programs for making humans righteous. Paul firmly corrects this idea in the epistle to the Galatians.
The cross and preaching, Galatians 3:1–3. A key to these verses is the line "before who's eyes Jesus Christ has been evidently set forth, crucified among you." It is unbelievable that people in that day, actual followers of Christ, could see Jesus dying on the cross and make his death null and void by continuing to observe the law.
Paul saw believers who continued to live under the law as having been bewitched.
The sad thing about law keepers today is that they see Christ dying to destroy sin and death and Satan's work and are still so confused over the scriptures that they prefer their own works of righteousness to what Christ did at Calvary. The problem with the law keeping believers is the gospel they have preach to them. Most law-keepers know little or nothing about the final Gospel. In fact, they feel robbed if anyone tries to take away their self effort religion. Law keepers, Paul says, want to be perfect in the flesh and that by their own self effort.
The final gospel proclaims the cross as a permanent reality. It is not a "come and go" act of God, it is the deepest and most everlasting aspect of truth there is in God. Yet there are many religionist who want to argue these facts The facts concerning the death of the Old Testament law are firmly bound up in two versus; Ephesians 2:15 and Colossians 2:14. It all becomes a matter of what one wants to believe.
To me it would be impossible for any believer to find even an iota of salvation or any blessing through his law keeping. If he does, Paul would say it is a work of the flesh. Paul still asked the same question today: how can anyone see Christ dying on the cross and even want to add to it any of his own works?
Finally, pole in these verses brings the whole issue down to a believers personal relationship with the Lord. He asked, "having begun in the Spirit, are you now made perfect in the flesh?" He says, you were saved by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ (you begun in the spirit); are you now figuring you will be perfect if you add the law and self effort to yourself salvation?
Once again, these verses show the importance of the final gospel given to Paul. Without Paul's message believers will always be confused and bewildered. Praise God, there are some ministers that are catching on to the fathers eternal plan and placing Paul's epistles foremost in their theology. This again is the true test of seing in the Scriptures what is most valid for Christian growth. Unless we follow Paul, as he follows Christ, we will never reach the prize of the high calling.
